It's a shame the looks are so divisive, personally I like it and I'm not an especially showy person. I've had mine for a month and love it so far, it's actually very refined and I'm getting 38-39mpg on my commute, so combined with the practicality of the car it's easy to live with. The seats are just about the best of any car I can think of (although it helps if you're not too large!) and it's a nice place to be.

I find the performance superb when you want to open it up, and the much maligned +R mode isn't as bad as some have made out. It's just a shame you can't opt for the additional steering weight and sharper throttle response without also stiffening the car up, but it's certainly not unbearable as some would have you believe.

I didn't really consider any of the rivals to any great degree - the Golf R is a lovely car, but just not that special (and I prefer the looks of the GTi), the Focus RS looks like a lot of fun but I'm not a huge fan of this shape of Focus, and the interior doesn't look so great. The Megane also sounds like fun, but I've had enough problems with the Renaults I've owned previously. The Cupra just doesn't hold any appeal.
Pleased to hear you're enjoying it! I would certainly agree with your observations so far too, and it's interesting to hear what you have to say about the rivals. Thanks for your feedback!

I guess I'm going in the opposite direction from many of you.

I personally like the looks and will probably own one at some point.

I have had civic type r's in the past. Hated the ep3... sold that fairly quickly. We now run an fn2 as the wife's car. 4 years on and 50K miles we still love it. It's hilarious it does her commute to work and does the fun stuff too. I really like it. It's used daily and yes it's a GT.

We will get the new one, not at 30K though, partly because I'm tight and don't want to lose loads in depreciation and partly because the funds are already set aside for MY new toy smile

But.... absolutely yes in the future the wife will have one (it's really just another car for me, let's face it).

Certainly doable, but much easier of a wet surface and not quite as impressive or smokey as a good RWD doughnut or burnout.

A friend of mine owns an FN2 and I have had quite a lot of use of the car, I think it's great, the only fly in the ointment were the 19" alloys (now removed), they destroy the ride and make the car quite crashy on a rutted/bumpy b road which means you can't really exploit it as much as you might want to (well, I can't, rather). It's a far better car on some 18" ones, no doubt about it.

I would 100% own one of these new gen Type Rs but I'm in the same boat as you - £9,000 down and £400 a month doesn't represent good value to me regardless of how much I like the car, it'd have to be mega special for me to stump that up. /yorkshireman

I have ached with want ever since these were released. Had an EP3 new back in 2005. That was fun but too small ultimately and the steering was pants.

One reason I love these is because of the divisive styling. One man's ugly is anothers aggressive and purposeful.

People talking about the type r brand being diluted is utter nonsense. The depth of engineering that has gone into this car is significant and as mentioned what's stopping people buying a non GT model if they feel that strongly about it?

I currently drive a btcc kitted mk2 Leon FR and the new Cupra leaves me cold on styling just like the Golf R. New Focus RS sits in between the two styling wise and will no doubt be awesome but too hard to get hold of.

Once Type R prices drop to around 15K I'll be in there and stuff what anyone else thinks wink

I still prefer this to the "crashed through halfords window" look.

I appreciate it is fast and capable, and being a Honda should have engineering integrity at the core of its design, but the ridiculously OTT styling is a deal-breaker for me. As a 40 year old, I would just feel far too much of a tit driving it. It looks like a Max Power special. Like an 18 year old has got a base Civic and attacked it with bolt on tat.

If you were in your 20s, you might get away with it, or even like the image it projects. But grown-ups can't possibly expect to be taken seriously driving one of these.

I don't mind a well-designed bodykit, and a nice set of wheels, but not when they look like they've been coated in Araldite and thrown at the car. And then at the point where it should have stopped, they've only just got going.

But then I suppose 40-something's said the same thing about the Escort Cosworth back when I was 18 and thought it was the epitome of cool. Let's face it, I am just getting old biggrin

I've had mine for 10 days now and it is awesome. Being able to cruse around getting 37 mpg then every now and then tapping in to the power is very grin inducing. I love how it has hints of race car, its as if it were an ex alcaholic, you temp it with a dram from your right foot and it goes nuts!
The view of the speedo is ok, just need to get the seat and steering wheel position right. Driving position is perfect, nice and low.
Bad points so far - the rear arch extensions get battered with stone chips, the infotainment is not intuative but I still like it, the engine sounds odd-kinda sewing machine with a peco big bore attached to it, auto lights and wipers just do whatever they want. I got mine approved used so it came with 12k miles, 1st service done and Avon tyres, oh and many stone chips which the dealer tried to rectify with a touch up pen 10 mins before I collected it!!
Over all I absolutly love it. The looks, the power, the seats and I love the fact that it has turbo lag. Reminissent of an Evo or a Cossie. Modern turbocharged cars don't feel turbo charged and I think thats a shame. You want to feel that shove and woosh. Intoxicating.

Im 30, I'd have one. Who cares what other people think? Who cares if random strangers on the road "take you seriously"? If you like it, and they dont then that is their problem.

One thing to add. The throttle seems to hang between every gear change. I drove a brand new one and it was the same. Annoying.

No I think you should never feel a tit for driving a car you like.
I'm 43, have and still do add tat to my cars because I want to . If the tat doesn't work out, I remove it...
I'd feel a tit for driving a badly designed car though... a car that doesn't adhere to my personal preferences in aesthetics, proportion and detailing....

st...I'm back in this thread and have seen those photos...

I generally like sporty looking cars - especially if they can back it up with performance....however... WTF is going on with the type R "styling" that has loads of cooling air ducts for engine, brakes and a rear diffuser - that are FAKE!
no really WTF! They are all stick ons and don't even go through the bodywork to any of the working bits. When these bits are functional - I get it...had them on the GTR, Evo etc... but to take a car, cover it in double sided tape and throw it into a Halfords go faster section is taking the p*ss.

Definitely keen to see how it stacks up against the Focus RS. In terms of bang for buck and attitude I think even the Type R would defer to the RS. And at the same price... I wouldn't want to have to pick between them (I totally would!).

I love car's of all warps! But parting with the cash to own one is a different matter!

When it comes to fast Honda's there is simply no comparison with the competition, it looks like Halfords designed it and technology against cost leaves it at the bottom of my list.

Therfore the the only facinating point for me is who on earth would buy it?

Well that explains why my FK2 turns so many heads! People must be thinking 'Look at that 60 year old tit!'

At my age you really don't care about image, it's the driving experience that matters.

Mind you, I would feel a tit wearing Superdry stuff, I guess....smile
