You won't embarrass much with a 2.8 VR6 these days, except yourself perhaps I had a lot of love for the VR6 motor (so long as it had a turbo bolted to it) but the last VAG diesel I drove (A 170hp I think) would murder a VR6 at any speed.
Must be the country difference, over here in the netherlands 95% of what's on the road will be well below 150hp, cars get taxed pretty heavily on CO2 here, with the result that the most popular leasecars tend to be the 1.6/1.5 eco dervs. That VR6 Bora does 0-60 in 7.4, quite respectable over here, and just as fast as a mk7 golf GTD (184hp)In the US, the Jetta GLI has always closely mirrored the spec of Golf GTI.
Current Jetta GLI shown here...
Then there's home-grown efforts like the Ford Taurus SHO with a 365 BHP 3.5 litre twin turbo V6.
Not enough grunt for you? Well, here's the Cadillac CTS-V with a 640 BHP 6.2 litre V8 plucked from a Corvette.
Then there's the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat with a 707 BHP 6.2 litre V8!

Three left field choices- Mondeo 4x4 (I know probably the only person who bought one ) ; Lancia Thema 8.32 (respectable family saloon enlivened by Ferrari V8- and better sounding than in normal habitat as it had crossplane crank) ;and the bonkers Daimler Majestic Major- huge saloon with very staid styling which left most chaps' MGs and TRs gasping thanks to a stonking 4,5 litre V8 up front.
Insignia SRI 2.0i Turbo anyone?
217BHP, looks like a poverty spec Vauxhall

Great shout on the Tempra, a model I'd almost forgotten even in its most cooking of versions. And then I found this (Brazil only supposedly) - 165bhp!:Supposedly there was a quick 2L twin-cam Regata before that too, but I have no recollection of it

They actually had their own championship in the 90's, before merging with the Tomcats to bump up the numbers to race.
This one is a UK spec 2.8 VR6 but updated for the VW cup.

Ouch! Nice car but, £505 VED and 23.9mpg combined. That's 17-18mpg realistic. It would have to be more speshal than an Insignia to drag the notes from my wallet.Insignia 2.8i V6 Turbo 4x4 Elite, 257BHP

That reminds me, we also get a hot version of the Insignia here in the US.
Meet the Buick Regal GS, packing a 259 BHP 2.0 turbo four and all-wheel-drive.
You can also get the same engine in the Buick Regal Turbo with front-drive and less extrovert styling.

Although South Africa really is the land of the obscure performance saloon
Although I can't recall much about it, I'm certain Ford SA did a limited batch of Sierras that were made just for racing purposes. I think there were 350(?) made to meet the threshold of a production unit and were only available in white!I think it was a 3 door swb awd version, although I may be getting mixed up with the Audi Quattro of similar vintage.
