Great shout on the Tempra, a model I'd almost forgotten even in its most cooking of versions. And then I found this (Brazil only supposedly) - 165bhp!:
Other than the twin arm mirrors that's a handsome looking thing.Leins said:
Supposedly there was a quick 2L twin-cam Regata before that too, but I have no recollection of it

The original SEAT Leon is the car that everyone remembers particularly the Cupra/Cupra R models.
Whereas the Toledo 4-door predates the Leon (launched 1999, Leon 2000) and the Toledo got the same 1.8 20vT 180bhp engine as the Leon Cupra (later FR). This was a rare machine as the Toledo wasn't a big seller even with a Diesel engine but whereas everyone would go for the smooth 2.3 V5 170bhp the performance was with the 1.8 20vT in its day - it wasn't even badged as a Cupra just a Sport IIRC.
I was wondering whether this would get a mention. I had a black 04 plate Toledo 20VT Sport about 10 years ago. Main reason for buying was they were about 2/3rds the price of a Leon Cupra, and cheaper to insure, probably because nobody knew what they were. They also had a 6 speed box whereas the similar Octavia VRS only had a 5-speed. Very conservative styling, bit of a Q car all round. Lovely car, still missed.Whereas the Toledo 4-door predates the Leon (launched 1999, Leon 2000) and the Toledo got the same 1.8 20vT 180bhp engine as the Leon Cupra (later FR). Prefer a Turbo'd v6 that looks like a repmobile?
Insignia 2.8i V6 Turbo 4x4 Elite, 257BHP

Ouch! Nice car but, £505 VED and 23.9mpg combined. That's 17-18mpg realistic. It would have to be more speshal than an Insignia to drag the notes from my wallet.Insignia 2.8i V6 Turbo 4x4 Elite, 257BHP

17-18 mpg is far from realistic.

Thats because they were either getting nicked or stuck at Vauxhall getting their transfer boxes replaced It blew up the transmission (or similar, I just remember being told the gearbox broke) when he was showing off to his team mates.
Few months later at an away game the car was stolen.
Sticking to the stereotype by the looks of it, I just didn't realise that until I saw your post!
How about an ultra rare Alpina 3.0si? I believe it was the fastest four door car in the world at the time.(0-60 in 6.1 seconds and nigh on 150mph top end)

Seems it was "only" 110hp though. Still more powerful than any Regata I'd ever heard of though. Wonder if they did the engine in the estate? ("Weekend"?)KarlMac said:
Well the thread has sort of morphed into one on all obscure performance saloons, and that can only be a good thing IMO, so yep that definitely counts I thinkjogger1976 said:
