Great shout on the Tempra, a model I'd almost forgotten even in its most cooking of versions. And then I found this (Brazil only supposedly) - 165bhp!:

Other than the twin arm mirrors that's a handsome looking thing.

Supposedly there was a quick 2L twin-cam Regata before that too, but I have no recollection of it
A saloon version of something like the Ritmo 130TC?

& going the other way, Imprezza STi 5 door.
Not particularly obscure though as there were loads around.
How about obscure versions of those common performance saloons

The original SEAT Leon is the car that everyone remembers particularly the Cupra/Cupra R models.

Whereas the Toledo 4-door predates the Leon (launched 1999, Leon 2000) and the Toledo got the same 1.8 20vT 180bhp engine as the Leon Cupra (later FR). This was a rare machine as the Toledo wasn't a big seller even with a Diesel engine but whereas everyone would go for the smooth 2.3 V5 170bhp the performance was with the 1.8 20vT in its day - it wasn't even badged as a Cupra just a Sport IIRC.
I was wondering whether this would get a mention. I had a black 04 plate Toledo 20VT Sport about 10 years ago. Main reason for buying was they were about 2/3rds the price of a Leon Cupra, and cheaper to insure, probably because nobody knew what they were. They also had a 6 speed box whereas the similar Octavia VRS only had a 5-speed. Very conservative styling, bit of a Q car all round. Lovely car, still missed.

and uber rare RS2 sedan. made for a few of high flying execs at the time -

I think Cleveland police used a vento vr6 in mid nineties to chase joy-riders around north riding.

Thats because they were either getting nicked or stuck at Vauxhall getting their transfer boxes replaced wink

Alfa 155 Q4 widebody. In all sense, a 16v Integrale.

Ouch! Nice car but, £505 VED and 23.9mpg combined. That's 17-18mpg realistic. It would have to be more speshal than an Insignia to drag the notes from my wallet.
AND that price! £7.5K for a 7 year old Insignia! eek

As I suspected, the Cossie won. I still like the Alfa.

I have the same engine in my Saab (mapped to 285bhp), 25 mpg is easily achievable under 'swift' mixed driving.
17-18 mpg is far from realistic.

That made me laugh because my neighbour had one when I was a kid, he was the cool dad because he was a pro footballer, the fact he played for a bottom league team that was one up from the pub league was irrelevant to us.

It blew up the transmission (or similar, I just remember being told the gearbox broke) when he was showing off to his team mates.
Few months later at an away game the car was stolen.
Sticking to the stereotype by the looks of it, I just didn't realise that until I saw your post!

Seems it was "only" 110hp though. Still more powerful than any Regata I'd ever heard of though. Wonder if they did the engine in the estate? ("Weekend"?)

Well the thread has sort of morphed into one on all obscure performance saloons, and that can only be a good thing IMO, so yep that definitely counts I think
