You can get a new 12 month MOT any time you like. On newer, more valuable cars over 3 years old it is common practice to get it done in preparation for sale even if it wasn't due for months.

Any really cheap car could be a pending disaster, that's the fun part! But yeah, cars with short MOTs need to be extra cheap and as a buyer you would need to be on maximum lemon alert.
Very helpful - cheers.

This makes me think of something similar. Take a look at lease take back sites. There's a few people offering the ability to take over leases (buy my lease I think one was called) and just pay until the end of their term, they have paid the deposit and they have some reason they wish to get out of the lease, but they are trying to avoid the early cancellation charges.
Interesting, so I guess this is legal practice.

Would be great to hear from anyone who's had any direct experience of this.

No final choice made as yet.

Arrived in London a few days ago. A reminder of traffic after all these years has left me in no great rush to drive until I'm back in the suburbs.

There are definitely many more newer / higher end cars on the roads than I can recall, so the economy must be better than the press reports it to be!

If anyone has a recommendation for a company that sell the remainder of leases [e.g last 6 months or so], this would be appreciated. I've googled a fair bit, but it doesn't seem to be too common a practice.

Cheers.

Google 'buy my lease'. It's never companies, it's always private individuals

Shedding is fine as long as you aren't expecting to be judged on your car. My 12 year old Mondeo is currently covered in bird droppings and sporting some dents, missing wheel trims and according to security at work it's an eyesore.

However I bought it within shed money with under 140k on the clock and have been trying to kill it for two years so I can get something nicer. It's had some servicables like water pump, tyres, springs and soon the brakes but I'd recommend one as budget motoring for anyone, it's not fast compared to a lot of metal on here but it will keep up at motorway speeds, accommodates all the daughter's stuff and carries all our holiday luggage gets 40mpg driven hard and isn't terribly uncomfortable, all for less than the first payment on a new C Class? Get a shed.

Which you often are. Only recently, advice / suggestions on here were being assigned weight based on garage profiles!

I found it quite liberating not giving a toss what I drive...although I will admit I feel a bit too old to mix it up with the seemingly ever younger MX-5 drift kids.

I've taken a look at these and others - thanks. Some trepidation on my part dealing with an individual rather than a company.

Experience share would be welcome if anyone has actually bought a lease.

Horses for courses I guess. During the period I owned 'nice' cars, it was always important to me to keep them nice, through correct maintenance, cleaning, etc. Plus cleaning a car is good exercise if done properly!

However I also think a shed would be fine in the meantime, as my requirements are simply functional.

Although the place I'm staying currently in West London has both Mercedes and Audi dealerships literally visible, and the new C Class Coupe does look rather nice. From a distance at least - I haven't ventured over for a closer look yet in order to avoid temptation!

If you are scared of dealing with inidividuals then that put your original question to bed! Shed is not for you, since to shed properly you need to deal with the common public. hehe

It's been almost a month now, grow a pair and decide will you. The next time you post here should be a photo of the car you bought. biggrin

I fancy giving shedding a go.

Find an old Volvo estate and tool around not giving a stuff if things don't work.

Sorry to disappoint, but there's no photo just yet! No car required for at least a month, until I get out of London.

Just to clarify - I meant taking on a lease with 6 months or so remaining from an individual. Too many horror stories about costs on returning to lease company at end of term.

I think I'll be capable of buying a shed privately, although my last shed was 1998, and last private purchase 2006 wink

How can that even be possible - looking on "take my lease" someone's offering 8 months of a Corsa lease at £202 per month and they'll pay me £1000 to take it?

£600 to run a lease car for 8 months ?

When looked at in the context of something like the OP's position this would be a cheap way to have access to a newish motor for such a short period of time.

A normal hire or short-term lease would be much more.

Of course a shed would probably be cheaper still...

Import something like Chevy SS or anything American with a huge V8. I'd do that in a heartbeat if I was in your position. You'd sell it with profit after a couple of years so that would offset cost of petrol. Or keep it forever and avoid driving in a stty eurobox.

Buy a shed from PHer. My current shed cost £350 2 years/30k ago, with a fresh cambelt, recent coolant, regularly serviced etc, I've probably sunk £250/300 in maintenance and tyres and she still works fine, gets me to work and back every day with not much fuss

Buy at the disposable end of the market then when you don't need it any more you havent got to worry about selling it, just give it away/scrap it.

Peoples situations change. They need something bigger and they need it now. Or they stretched themselves financially, or their partner sacked them off and stopped paying it.

Couple that with high penalties for terminating early and you've got a situation where financially the best result is to try and sell the lease. Or keep paying till it expires.
