Luckily those robot arms caught it when it fell off the mountings.

Excellent car but the absolute last thing that needed a wing on it no matter how much some of us may like them, Utterly ruined by it. Stick the hard top back on it and give it a nice big duck tail imo

Not an EVO but big wings.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how bad is it to actually quite like this?

To put it another way, do I have to go & sit in the silly persons' corner?

If so, for how long?

I like the Japanese stuff too, maybe it's the cultural difference that makes that stuff seem somewhat acceptable compared most of the crap posted so far, I don't know laugh

I think it's the quality (mostly) of the workmanship that marks the Jap scene as special

Also the lunatic ideas

Rebuilding a car that burnt takes guts, dedication and determination, sadly lacking in most people.
Glad to see some people dont mind modifying and he has a clear goal for time attack which needs lots of downforce.
He is a human and learning through success and failure and doing it online to share knowledge and mistakes.
If everybody listened to "advice" from the eggspurts there would be no Einstein, Beatles, Tesla or Tesla cars.
To be clear, it's specifically the safety of reusing an Elise chassis damaged by fire that various people have questioned the sanity of; the S1 chassis is bonded with a dow epoxy which has upper temperature limits beyond which it stops being a strong bond and starts behaving more like silly putty. The chassis also has rivets to stop tearing but fundamentally that glue is what holds the car together.
There's no way to tell if the limits have been exceeded during the fire, but it's a fair bet they have.

More simply put, there's no way to tell how strong the now fire-damaged chassis is.
That's a pretty horrific liability, particularly in a car which will be used on a track.
I personally hope it doesn't end up with someone getting hurt.

As for Time Attack - Elises have been used as time attack cars before - Bernard Scouse (Thunderpants) did some work on an Audi engined one I think, which ended up with Steve Guglielmi racing one successfully with >500bhp in TA. They are lovely little things - I don't see anyone being upset with modifying in general.

The difference between that Audi car and this thing is that the Audi one was done properly.
This one is being done badly (not just my opinion) by someone learning as he goes, which is dangerous and has already led to a major problem.
What if next time it's the chassis coming apart in a crash and killing someone?

And lets not mention the Chinese ebay turbochargers, the protective fire tape, the turbo mount just behind the driver's head in the bulkhead etc etc etc.

Whilst I admire the chaps determination and the extent to which he isn't fazed to get his hands dirty with some pretty extreme things, his attitude is arrogant and know it all irrespective of whom is trying to give him advice (many of who have some decent fabrication skills and have been there and worn the t-shirt). The disregard to some of this, particularly on some of the safety aspects, makes me think this is (and was) always a recipe for disaster. Pioneer? Give me a break...

Gobstopper 2 has a pretty big wing to, although it must be functional

MY EYES!

I didnt see that build thread first time round, I had a read through it. Was all going so well and then for some reason it was fitted with a trolley handle. Ruins the entire car. frown

Ok fair retorts, agree safety first.
Aero mods flying away could cause some lethal 3rd party damage if not secure.
Agree there needs to be a secondary plate protecting against turbo casing fracture.
Cooked glue is unlikely to result in catastrophic failure unless it beside suspension attachment points.
The pic is from a supplier workshop, not his shed.
Yes i suppose raising the gearstick mech is not exactly pioneering, but personally i am copying it solely as a result of seeing his build, perhaps loads of similar mods on Seloc that i have not seen.

Talking of which, have you seen the gearstick housing on marc's S1 Exige? Truly a work of art. Now that is how to engineer a car properly....albeit I appreciate that is more of a money no object build.

Got a link? Im planning to put a mini-fire extinguisher in the vacant bit under the mech.

Those wings are clearly not providing enough downforce...
