Interesting comment RE brake servos. I've not driven an M2/3/4 but I've driven an M6 as well as the last M3 and can only think your comments totally do NOT have any relationship to those cars. The weighting was very good. The worst car I've driven for that was a Seat Ibiza!

I can imagine the M2 being great to drive, but it's let down by:

1. Strange styling - awful rear, busy front end
2. Interior is severely lacking

The other big issue is 90% of these cars are bought on PCP making the M4 cheaper to buy with the current 15-18% discounts and with 4% APR.

I'm pretty sure that unlike the 1M (which I loved) this isn't a limited production run either so they won't have the same residuals.

M3 or M4 Competition Pack looks like the best buy with the discounts to me.

Anyone comparing a non-M car to an M car e.g. 335d or 340d needs there head testing, they are a mile apart in driving dynamics, feel etc.

The brakes on the 1M seem fine to me, certainly in comparison to the ones on VW Tourans at work.

I've not driven the M2 but in the video review of the white car with the Performance exhaust he does specifically mention the high pedal pressure needed for corners and says it's not over-servoed

No idea how it compares with older M cars though

It'll be in comparison to older Porsche's.

When I drove a 986 Boxster the pedal felt absolutely solid compared to the M5. Somewhere in between would be good- I find the brake pedal on the Clio ideal, don't need loads of effort to stop but at the same time you can be hard on them and it's firm enough to modulate.

Slight bone to pick.

Motor trend video shows the m2 manual with the same 0-60 speed as the m4 (manual). This seems inaccurate per other road tests of the m4.

Furthermore, M4 dct competition pack, which is where the majority of future m4 orders will probably go (including one just made myself) is around 0.3 quicker to 60 than the m2 AND is cheaper to buy on pcp with the current pcp deals (as well as the fact that you can buy one if you want without waiting over a 1 year).

Completely agree.
It doesn't even have to be anything like as focussed/bespoke as a Cayman GT4 either.
The reality is of course, the manufacturers don't care enough about the likes of us. They are making big bucks on the big sellers (SUVs, saloons with options which cost them peanuts but the punters thousands).
M-cars for some time have been the "top of the range" and that has to follow the market demands for bright lights, huge wheels, bodywork etc. Most buyers are buying with their eyes.

The irony is that when you go to motor shows and look at heritage collections, it is always the slightly leftfield/bespoke/special cars that they roll out and the punters pore over and that gives the manufacturer credibility as an enthusiasts' brand. I used to think of BMW as an enthusiasts' brand.

A 2-series tin top with a NA 6 (hell, I'd even take a characterful 4 cyl), manual air con, no sunroof, light 18" wheels, passive dampers, bespoke geometry and a sport cloth/alcantara interior badged 2 series sport or "Si" (one they did earlier, not a classic I know) would be spot on.
They wouldn't need to sell thousands on PCPs to company car drivers but they could, in 10 years time, put one in their heritage collection and do retro adverts about how performance driving matters to BMW.

I currently have an e36 328i, and if I were in the market for a faster and more modern replacement, I'd be looking at the M2 as apposed to the M3/M4.

A good friend of mine has an M235i and when it's parked next to my 3 series, they are pretty much the same size. I really should get a picture next time he's round.

I wasnt sure about the elephant either and thought Mustang.

Not entirely sure they are comparable vehicles though.
Putting badge snobbery to one side, why would they not be comparable? Both coupes, both four seaters, both RWD, both can be had with a manual gearbox. Pretty comparable in my book. Apart from the fact that the Mustang has a honking N/A 5.0. Litre V8 which is more powerful than both the M2 and M4 (just).
In the latest 'CAR' issue they have an M2 vs GT350R Mustang comparison

These comparisons are starting to feel like comparing a Miele & AEG electrical appliance... (Ok they are different brands but the theory is sound).. Lots of technical comparisons, stats, figures, carbon, Performance Packs, Payment Options...

The more I read, the more I feel a draw to something like a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Probably (probably) slower around a track, lesser technology but maybe a bit more sense of humour and lunacy... Comparing 'M' series BMW's is starting to get very fussy..

You're not fooling anyone moose!

This over a Boxster 718 all day, every day.

As previously mentioned, a CSL, with a 330bhp (probably 8000rpm, to be honest) n/a N52, hydraulic steering, no "modes", carbon airbox and -100kg would be murder.

I would actually buy one from new.

The M4's illuminated M badges on the seats offend me greatly.

When did M-Division start sticking chav tat like this on their cars? Weren't they always supposed to be about the drive?

Doubt it'll happen. The E46 M3csl was an utter sales disaster!

Was it? I always assumed sales were limited by production not demand.

Of course it won't happen. I'll file that thought under "wishful thinking"

REALLY
Some people are never happy !!!
I'm awaiting delivery of a M 2 and can't bloody wait !!!previous M cars owned ....... 2x e36 M3 ...... E39 M5...... Z3 M coupe!!
Left BMW for a while. ( 2 911,s and host of Audi S and Rs models)
This little car has given me hope and yes for "some of you" it could be lighter , have less power and natural aspiration Blar Blar Blar !!! But back in the real world of 2016 this has to be the best new small coupe available and BMW have actually listened to what enthusiasts want and down to emission regulations etc etc the turbo is here to stay for now.... So either except it or buy something else!!!!And I personally think BMW haven't done a bad bloody job.
As for buying a M3/4 on a cheaper finance deal ... Sure you can ..... We'll see which one has depreciated like a stone in 12 months!!!!! M2 will have fantastic residuals due to supply and demand.
Oh and I'll tell you if it's Sh#t ..... But I think the majority of us already know the answer to that one smile
