Fantastic little cars.
Clutch cable breaks were due to bad routing + heat soak. Fitted a multi-vented bonnet from Radbourne Racing in Wimbledon, and no more broken cables for the next five years I had it. Also helped the Garrett
We wrapped the cable on my friend's 5GTT in Agriemach sleeving which extended the cable life enormously. Also worked on RS2000s

I also seem to remember carrying around a spare supply of clutch cables as they were always breaking
Wasn't that because of the crappy routing for RHD cars?
Yep, I had one snap just managed to limp home in 2nd gear but was entertaining having to judge traffic lights and junctions for about 5 miles till I got home. biggrin

I've had 4 of them. Can't count how many clutch cables, head gaskets and heads I got through. But so easy to work on when you're 17 and skint.

Superb car's!

I owned a Raider, back in the day. I still miss that old school turbo, after the lag, the boost just smacked you in the back. Addictive!

My dad had a R5 1.4 which was mostly awful and he knew nothing about cars, it went through 4 clutch cables and 3 throttle cables.

I learned to get it home using gentle clutch and the choke (I think the richer mixture helped against stall - no idea I was young at the time but it seemed to work)...

Just like the 205 GTI I never fancied these, a modified RS2000 always appealed more.

R5 Monaco's. Leather seats made it feel rather slidey in the bends and the power steering was so light
Ah, there's your mistake you see. Power steering. You don't want that.
You sir, needed a GTX same 1.7 engine no PAS and lovely 80's valour seats! Loved mine I had three 5's a 1.4tse, the afore mentioned GTX and a Turbo. The Tse replaced a Fiesta 1.1 Pop and the difference was like night and day!

The bloody throttle cables were a nightmare stupid design with a weird crimp fastening binned it in the end and used a chock block! I was a dab hand at driving home on the choke seemed quite normal at eighteen!

Genuine LOL at using the choke to drive home. I think that is a rite of passage for GTT owners. I recall having to use BB fishing shot as a rudimentary crimp to repair my throttle cable.

Think I'll MOT mine this week, it's had a year resting.
Wish it luck!

Really fast with a boost upgrade, helped no doubt by weighing as much as a packet of crisps. Good driving position, decent pedal weights, very good brake feel. So much more fun than modern stuff.

Yep very fond memories here of G502FVV in tungsten grey.

I did 'upgrade' quite a lot in my youthful days.

Vented bonnet. Twin headlamps which I never could get the main beam direction correct. Strut brace which made the front very stiff as the front end did tend to twist a bit. Leda hardcore dampers with lowered rear torsion bar & granite front springs. & of course the bleed valve to up the boost.

However the most unreliable car ever. Wouldn't re-start after a hot run. Changing the oil filter required the strength of Hercules but with hands the size of Barbie. & it was the smallest filter in the world & you really needed to change it every 3k miles. Dodgy electrics. Panels that would dent just by looking at them. Even the front seat mechanism would bend through use & would require fettling to work.

Head on crash? Anything bigger than a large moth & you are in deep do do my friend...

But I'd have a sorted one in a heartbeat smile

Always had a soft spot for them when I was around 13 growing up on max power magazine. I will make do with the wallpaper until I can get it ticked off the bucket list.
