What's the top speed on the Tesla?
Around 155mph, they are very quick at normal road speeds, the acceleration tails off noticeably above around 100mph but that is not exactly a problem in the UK.

The noise in IC cars is increasingly fake. Big petrol engines are glorious irrelevancies, and not long for this world. When the AMG throbbers end up with a massively charged hybrid four pot and a fake soundtrack, will you still care about the noise?

There is some truth in this. I dont see much attraction in a turbo 4 pot compared to an electric motor, except for the interaction of a clutch and gear change. Comparing an auto modern petrol car to an EV, the differences are much less marked than comparing an EV to a manual car with a proper engine.

But that logic assumes you can only ever own one car.

An AMG won't sound like a TVR, or a Ferrari, etc.

A progressive way of looking at it is that you have clothes, or dress watches, that you keep for special occasions. Perhaps they would even look out of place in everyday life. Doesn't render them useless though, it just means when you DO wear them it feels that bit more special...

Tesla (EV) for trollies, V8 burbler for jollies.
My dream garage - Fiesta ST or RS3 for a daily and an Elise 190 S1 and a Mercedes CLK Black for a toy. Maybe a Singer 911 for hoons.

A Tesla would never be in my garage. If I really really had to have an economical car it would be a LaFerrari biggrin

Yes, publicity...

Because landing rockets on ships doesn't cut the mustard.

They're not exactly slow above 100mph, skip to 1 minute for bonkers acceleration:

So the acceleration is a bit like a Group B rally car. Bloody fast but then it just runs out of steam on the straight.

Since there's no gear ratio variation, peak power starts to drop off after about 80mph. By 100 it's generating about 80% of peak power; I can't see any figures for higher speeds but looking at the shape of the curve I'd guess it's about 50% by 155.

Fitting a two-speed gearbox could dramatically increase top speed but I guess it would be a bit pointless for most buyers.

It hits 150mph in 23 seconds so it's hardly 'running out of steam'

Elon Musk is not a petrolhead. Cars should be produced by petrolheads. See AMG as an example.
He may well be more of a petrolhead than you.

Eh? He's an controversial rich eco-fanatic ("snake-oil salesman"), who divorces his wives for publicity, goes on $1 salaries for mo' money from publicity, buys things that petrolheads want for publicity, he's bloody full of himself and a genius at that. Tesla is for boring people. Leave it to the grandmas and just watch it die out. Trendy brands don't work out, no matter how sophisticated it makes you look. Only a bellend would want a 17" TFT glued on to the materials off a 1992 Ford Escort.

Seriously? A Fiesta is a "dream"? You can't set your sights a little higher?

All right it's not a dream car since I can afford to buy one outright now but it's still better than the bloody Model 3

No. And nor will I ever want to. If I was to spend £85,000 I would buy an A8L, Bentley Flying Spur or a slightly used S63 AMG.
Model 3 alternatives? Audi A3 e-tron. Volkswagen Golf GTE.
Model X?
A Range Rover Autobiography.
