The new type r - is it a sales flop?

Nope that would be the VXR range. Prior to that it was the GSI range. SRI has always just been the slightly warmed up standard version.
ST is more akin to VXR.
The engine in my SRi was only available in SRi trim spec. 2.0 turbo. Admittedly stuff like the 1.8 could be any trim, including SRiST is more akin to VXR.
Actually, I don't know why I'm doing this. I did say that I thought it was pretty much a sporty trim spec. And gave the first two examples I thought of. It doesn't mean I thought they were also exactly the same and SRi has been very inconsistent in its application anyway.
It was my way of saying "I hold my hands up, I know something new now, thank you"

It is an interesting distinction - Type-R was effectively a sub-brand rather than a trim level, in the way that BMW M or Mercedes AMG are. You might consider Ford RS to be similar. Vauxhall's VXR, RenaultSport and Volvo Polestar are attempts to do the same thing. At the same time that other manufacturers have tried to create these, the others have broadened and diluted their use of them. BMW have M-designated SUVs and M badges as a trim level. Early Type-R cars were more strongly differentiated from the cars they were derived from, with extensive weight saving measures and as a result were often pretty raucous, uncompromised things. Honda used the VTi badge for the more civilised hot versions. The latest Type-R is not like the early ones, in that it is not particularly stripped out and lightened, but more like them than more recent iterations in that the Nurburgring lap time was such a key part of the marketing that raw track performance was a big part of the engineering priorities.

I was at japfest on Sunday and got to take a close up look at a couple of them.
Sorry there just not my bag, a little bit too yobbish for my liking. Although I did get to se the torquen-gt stand and there brand new civic mugen rr, on of only a couple hundred in the world. Very nice. Would rather have had the Honda nsx-r next to it though.
I was there too and while I'd agree Torque GT's Mugen RR would be my choice the new CTR's looks amazing in the flesh. Warmed to them alot more than the pictures can. I own a DC2 Integra Type-R and I really want to like the new FK2, but I just can't. I just don't find it well proportioned in terms of looks, although it does drive very well.
Tegiwa Imports has fitted a set of RPF1's and adjustable coilovers to theirs and it looks a little better I suppose!
(Apologies for the rubbish photos, I stole them from a quick Google search!)
Agreed. The Mugen RR is a great looking car.

Agreed. It really does look much better than in photos. The rear three quarter doesn't quite do it for me, but maybe in time. The wheels are dwarfed in photos for instance but better when you see the whole car for yourself.

God, even the new Mustang looks very watered down and sanitised, from the last version and, When I was in the Ford dealers, they had a sky blue RS and I couldn't even bring myself to vaguely want one (though a yellow ST looks better as it lifts the otherwise dull exterior to shout "sporty" in a less apologetic way). I'm not really one for these sporty models being embarrassed to be sporty.

Bit far from the Mugen RR Concept car mind...Although only a concept, looked like a JGTC car for the road. I believe the motor was switched to longitudinal layout but not actually coupled
