The new type r - is it a sales flop?
Discussion
I parked next to one at the Haynes Museum Breakfast Club a while back and had a good look around it.
They do look a lot better in Blue. As already said, the rear doesn't look anywhere near as good as the prototype but I think the biggest improvement in looks would come from fitting some less garish wheels that actually fill the arches properly.

OK I will bite
I bought one!
I test drove one a good few months ago, and just found it far too "focused" if that is the word. Suspension rock hard, elastic bands for tyres, seats that grabbed you!
Anyway I was happy with my M135, but it was coming to to three years old and had been giving me a few problems.
A type R came up with nearly 6K off the retail, and 2000, miles locally. I went for another test drive, this time being more aware of what it was going to like, expecting to still not really like it.
FFS!! I loved it, the first time I was probably trying to compare it to the BMW, when it really is the polar opposite. Looks do not bother me in the slightest, well I bought a 1 series. More people have commented on the Civic in the 3 weeks I have had it, than ever commented on the BMW. All have been complimentary, but then again they all know that my tastes in cars (And bikes I suppose) are a bit different. Is that a bad thing?
I have done 389 miles today, A road, Motorway, A road, B road. the car really is "A road" focussed if that means anything? Up here (Scotland) we have loads of roads it will love. It must be superb on the track, but that will never happen with me, I am an old git you see...
Anyway, flame away, some of us had to buy one.
Have a good weekend all!
Sorry to hear about Prince, bloody terrible

- Media interface chucked it (£700 Warranty Repair)
- Front wheel bearing failure (£250 warranty repair)
- Steering rack issue (£200 warranty repair)
- Front pads and discs shagged - £600, that included a discount, that bloody hurt!
- O/S (F & R) shocks getting rattly! WTF!!! (It never made it back to the dealer for this)

And personally i think you've got one hell of a car. Alright, it's not the last for in discreet performance but i should imagine it's great fun when you are giving it the beans.I bought one!
One thing i must say, it's much smaller in real life than it appears in pictures and felt very well made and put together. Speaking as a RenaultSport fanboy you just can't compare the two.
If it was a cheap lease deal, or perhaps a lightly used second hand purchase at £10k off list i'd be tempted

How do you think it compares to the FN2 and EP3?
Not sure how to answer to be honest? They are 2 very different cars, the FN2 and EP3 being your typical high revving CTR (Which I loved at the time) There was always the perpetual moaning about the FN2 being crap as it had no LSD and crap rear suspension, Clarkson forgot that the later ones did have an LSD though.
Anyway, the new model apparently has 400NM of Torque (M135 has 450? I think) far more than the oldies could ever dream of. 4th and 5th gear are the sweet spot up here, silly speed is possible, only if you have the bottle! For me it is the mid range grunt (ON A CTR!!!!!) 3000rpm --> 6000RPM, it just makes me smile, overtaking is a dream!
In reality it is a massive step up for the Type R brand, it will not please the "Purists", bit to be honest I am too old and grumpy to worry what anyone thinks - (Saying that there were a few comments when I was in the Office this week, more along the lines of... "Ah, I see you have another new car, absolutely not suitable for the job we do... you lucky bastid! ) I work in a consultancy/IT/Traing type job, and should be driving a Generic diesel VAG I suppose. That will be Chocolate!!!
I think I'm warming to the looks having seen one today. At 42 though I think I'd look a bit of a dick in one and I'd get fed up of continually being goaded into a race by some Audi S5 driving suit wearing bd.
Then again, I think I might test drive one - I bought a new Golf R cash back in december and sold it in two months as it was just dull.
A combination of softened looks but razor drive would suit me best.

A lot more soft but still looks the business.
And if that doesn't tickle your pickle..

Lease deals are the only reason we're not seeing many. I don't think Honda ever wanted this to be common as much, hence the low production numbers.
I recently had delivered a Cupra 290 on lease, so about as understated as a "hot hatch" gets but I would have loved a Type R if I could have got one anywhere near the payments I got on the Seat.
I could have got a Golf R for the same as I paid for the Seat too, but I'm so sick of seeing them, hearing about them and reading about them - I was desperate to do something ever so slightly different! The Type R is not perfect, but it's a statement and it's the only current hot hatch that does make me turn in the street or have a good look around when one turns up at a show or meet.
I think Honda were brave, didn't get the looks quite right but some of my favourite cars are opinion splitters - so this one suits me nicely!

Excellent business model by Honda if that's the case. Let's keep the numbers sold low so they're not common on the roads.I recently had delivered a Cupra 290 on lease, so about as understated as a "hot hatch" gets but I would have loved a Type R if I could have got one anywhere near the payments I got on the Seat.

While you may be sick of the sight of the Golf R, I'm guessing VW are more than happy with how popular they have become
We have 2 guys in the office who've bought one (one in red and the other white), both are well in to their 40's and both have come from a long line of "decent" cars. They really rate the cars and only have good things to say about them, no regrets from them about buying one.
For me, I'm not sure and I think if this was my bag I'd go for an RS Focus instead.
