I'm glad other people picked up on the Scirocco R comment! laugh

It's probably mapped so the old modified vs standard debate again.

I haven't seen one yet, which is a shame as I think it looks mad in a good way. Its to the far left of the Focus RS as the Golf is to its far right.

If I was Honda I'd offer a mechanically identical version with a toned down body kit, I suspect that would sell a lot better and you'd still have the option for its mad brother for anybody who wants it.

My thoughts exactly! Having looked at those pictures of the red one shown a page or so back, I can honestly say I wouldn't drive that. Looks like bits bolted on here and there, like someone has raided the RIpspeed bargain bin.

The Golf R is subtle, too subtle in some ways but at least it looks like an adult would own it. I agree that a hot version of any car should be a little bit more out there but it's crossed the line of looking a bit special to looking a bit special in a Forest Gump kind of way!

Having seem some pictures look looks like a bad aftermarket body kit has been stuck to a civic, i don't like the standard looks so putting a wide arch kit on something i don't find appealing already is not going to make a difference to me

Below is a link to the evo car of the year, has the type r and the sub 8 leon which is what it should be compared to imo and i know which i'd have. Around 15mins in for the stuff on civic and leon, and the Leon beat out the civic overall

https://youtu.be/ZUhKhQP4PBo

The golf r i do find a bit plain and common but i have with most past ones

No cheap lease deals ?
I'd say this is the main reason. Whenever you see a Golf R you just know its a lease.

Okay I'll bite, yes being FWD it's not great off the line but is more than a match for the rest once rolling, baring in mind the huge power difference between in and the RS3 / A45 / FRS.

Saying is it "at best equal to, some of the figures suggest slower than, my Scirocco and that's [my Scirocco] a car released over 6 years ago" is complete and utter rubbish.
Scirocco R 0-100mph = 13.7 seconds (Book figure)
FK2 Type R 0-100mph = 12.4 seconds (Book figure)
FK2 Type R 0-100mph - 11.3 seconds (Top Gear Test)

That's a world of difference. Drive one, they are far quicker than a Scirocco R.

This.

I have seen 1 (one). It's not even like you can mistake them for a lesser Civic because of that ridiculous wing.

I suspect the sort of person who can afford a brand new Civic also has either a Good Lady Wife or Boss at Work who would tell them not to buy something so juvenile and get a nice sensible Golf R or Audi S3 etc.

So they tested a Scirocco with DSG and launch control at a 0-100 time 0.4 sec SLOWER than Top Gear tested for the Civic...

Yes, I don't doubt the Scirocco is a very quick car but the facts show it isn't as quick as the Civic.

Agree... The civic doesn't look anymore 'Barry' than say... a Juke Nismo RS...

This too. Looks like it has been crashed into Halfords tacky bolt on section.

£32k for a front wheel drive fast car, no thanks.

Yep, I do accept my initial comment was probably a bit hasty - I completely accept the Type R is quicker.

However, I still stand by my point that the Type R occupies a middle ground where it's neither the fastest, the best to drive or the easiest to live with on a daily basis which is perhaps why it's not as popular as other comparable vehicles.

I'd also like to point out, once again, that I am a BIG fan of the car; not so much though that I'll ignore its shortcomings compared with its competition.

Your point is entirely correct. Ironically, the same traits can apply to say the Golf R, not the quickest, not the best to drive or the best to live with (debatable) but is hugely popular. If I had the money, would I buy a Civic Type R? Possibly, FWD appeals to me, I prefer the Cupra 280 over the Golf R. The fact of the matter is though, the Civic, I assume, is not as affordable as its German rivals via PCP or lease, and if I had the choice of a Golf at £300/month or the Civic at £350/month I'd take the Golf every time.

An Evo may very well be Barry, but they are awesome cars - I'd love an old V or VI.

Love the styling, saw one at Simply Japanese last year and it look great. To my eyes anything is an improvement over the EP3 which looks almost as dull as the Golf. Though if I were to spend my money on a Honda it would be a used Integra or NSX wink

Its not a good look for anyone over 35/40 imo. Not unless you frequent the local McD's car park where the chavs hang out. biggrin
