RE: Renault 5 GT Turbo: PH Heroes

Very fond memories!
I had a pearl white phase 2 in the early nineties, unmodified, it was my first fast car and an absolute blast!
The steering was heavy but very communicative, and as my first turbo, I found the lag good fun.
After a while I had the suspension slightly lowered and a bleed valve added for some extra boost, fairly minor mods.
I also took it to Greece where I spent 15 months dicing with lots of Honda CRXs, great fun
Downsides were the annoying reluctance to start when hot, clutch cables also snapped fairly regularly, other than that I had nothing to complain about (if you overlooked the flimsiness of everything).
Be nice to drive one again some time.

The Radbourne Racing vented bonnet solved hot start and clutch cable issues. Fantastic fun and reliable car when standard. Renault knew what they were doing I had a pearl white phase 2 in the early nineties, unmodified, it was my first fast car and an absolute blast!

My first car was a 1989 3 door Volvo 340 DL which had the R5 engine in it. I remember dropping it into a garage for some exhaust work and the mechanic saying "You know this has a R5 engine in it dont you?" to which I said yes. He then said "for 100 quid I can stick a turbo on that". God how I wish I had said yes!
