Have you seriously never heard of one of the worlds biggest websites or is it just an un-amusing way of a man in his late 40's to early 50's to say he doesn't use Facebook?
I haven't heard of it either? What is it? Some kind of online book with a phot of people's faces?

I genuinely don't know.

Ouch for PH
Not really, PH is an old school forum and will sadly probably die with its members.

Their biggest rival is www.carthrottle.com and jalopnik, they're the biggest pure community based sites.
My experience of CT is that if you have an MX5, Skyline or some other bit of 90s Japanese tin then they'll circlejerk into a frenzy, but if you have something else then hardly anyone cares.

How does being a copy cat equal being a pioneer. I tried CT twice, not being a FB wker I came out if shattered. There's no logic in that interface.
I think you misunderstand me: it is PH which was the pioneer with this whole cars on the internet thing, but it has since been far surpassed by rivals in terms of social media interface; which, whether you like it or not, is the future of on-line communities.

PH's problem is that it was originally targeted at 30-something TVR enthusiasts, and those early adopters have grown with the site. Sure, there are a few younger subscribers (myself included), but the average PH demographic is mid-40s middle class divorcee who is reluctant to change (hence this wonderfully retro interface we're all forced to used).

Granted, CT is aimed at a much younger audience, but to give Alex his due (even though I find his on-line persona intensely irritating), he's exploited a niche largely left by PH's reluctance to move with the times.

I'm quite excited to see how DriveTribe shakes things up, given that its core appeal will be with the 40-something Jeremy Clarkson fans: this website's typical member.

It's like Friends Reunited but more modern.

What PH has is critical mass. I can ask virtually any question on the right forum and get genuinely expert answers.
Good luck on more 'modern' arenas where the main area of expertise is beard trimming.

Stamps? What are they? Some kind of postage system to replace pigeons?

Wow! He's been at Evo for a long time too. Everyone seems to be leaving Evo at the moment, which can't be a good sign.

His writing was the main reason I still bought EVO, it's a massive shame he's leaving.

Only just found out about this DriveTribe thing, I wonder if it'll be any good?

Is he leaving Evo or simply writing for DriveTribe as well?

A Twitter announcement said he'd be leaving EVO completely.

Also, from Twitter conversation it seems Harry Metcalfe and Jethro Bovingdon will be on there too.

It seems like people who have been accepted to lead a tribe now have access, for a sort of soft launch. It looks like you need a Facebook account to sign up though, which is going to put some people off I imagine.

The site has been running for a couple of weeks now with access restricted to tribe leaders only. It seems (at the moment - not sure if this will change) that you can only log in with a Facebook account, which almost, almost put me off, as I've resisted joining FB for many years, but I bit the bullet & I've been building my tribe page "Reg's Better Drivers" for the last few days.

Taking a brief look around the site, there is a lot of content, some of it quite good - it definitely covers an extremely broad variety of subjects across the whole motoring spectrum. I'm a little old-fashioned & its taking me a while to get used to the format, but it's fairly straightforward to use.

I'm led to believe that there are around 25,000 pre-registered users who will be given access from today onwards, and then it'll be opened up for full public access on or around 28 November.

I signed up to DriveTribe months ago and only had to use my e-mail; I noticed the other day registration now seems to be FB-only.

If anyone is on the beta and fancies helping me out, I need a few tribe members before they allow it to be soft launched -

How very disappointing. I was looking forward to this but will not be joining Facebook so it seems I will be able to join Drivetribe now either. I really don't understand why I can't just log in to the website like on here?

I know I'm a 'stick-in-the-mud' but why does everything online seem revolve around Facebook?

Because that's the way they want it. I'd suspect something commercial in this instance.

Nothing stopping you creating the most basic facebook profile ever, and using that.
