Dials and gauges in weird places.

You know I don't mind this centre gauge thing. At least the wheel's got getting in the way
I prefer to be able to have a quick look through the steering wheel and then back at the road. Mainly because I am convinced every other driver is not paying attention to the road. That said I am a very average height and have never found a steering wheel that obstructs my view. I can understand that others may not be so fortunate.
Still doesn't mean central gauges appeal to my sense of aesthetics.
Unless in a McLaren F1 or BAC Mono in which case they are sex.
Smart ForTwo mk1 and mk2 have the clock and revcounter as pods sticking out from the top of the dashboard, in the mk1 ForTwo the interior light was at the bottom of the centre console.
On the roadster the pods had boost and temperature dials.
On the new Smarts there is a combined clock and revcounter between the instrument panel and the windscreen pillar.

No where near as outlandish as the other posts but i always thought the two gauges in the center console on the Vauxhall Calibra were awkwardly placed;
Audi 80 coupe, nice in its time, had 3 gauges oil pressure, oil temp and, I think, amps. In an even lower site behind the gear lever. Mind you, they had lovely orange needles. Calibra and this are good examples of design afterthought to " posh up" a carthe best location ever is atop the fascia as in Mk1 cortina GT: four in a row - lovely. My Land Cruiser had 3 : yaw, pitch and inclinometer. They never worked. Forum at the time assured me that was normal,

Seems to be a GM thing.
About the only thing I didn't like about the VF over the VE.
Absolutely impossible to see when driving, I just use the digital display instead, though generally have IAT and oil temp displaying instead.About the only thing I didn't like about the VF over the VE.
The Speedo is also a bit of a bh to see tbh, but very rarely have to use it due to the HUD.

I remember some US muscle cars of the 60/70s with a rev gauge outside on the hood, or between hood and front screen.
The jap scene has made little gauges in the a pillar cover famous, maybe you can see these better when drifting ?
I've always thought the Gauges in the A pillar is a cost/ease of modification thing, but maybe it is easier to read? It's easy to pop the trim off and swap with one with gauges in, feed wires behind it and into the dash without having to make any modifications to any of the rest of the dashboard or centre console.The jap scene has made little gauges in the a pillar cover famous, maybe you can see these better when drifting ?
I can tell you from fitting a hands free mic for my headunit that it took me about 20mins to fit with 15 of that messing around getting the wire from the headunit through the back of the dash to the A pillar.
And now trolling cold callers while on the go has never been easier
