It's all come full circle now anyway. V12s are dead and turbos are in.

It blazed the trail from 1980 - 1991.

Another vote for the Lancia Delta S4.
Allegedly lapped by Henri Toivonen at Estoril in 1986 in a time that would have put him 6th on the grid for the GP that year.

Which could not be anywhere near true as 1986 was the last year of unrestricted boost in F1 So 1000+ hp in a 550kg single seater vs 500hp in a 900 kg rally car. As much as I love group B no chance it could be that fast.

The C4 276bhp 4.2 V8 Avant was known as the 'S4 Plus' and also 'S6 Plus' during its run from '92 to '94, pre-dating the 1994 introduced RS2.
Sorry, but that's not true. The pre-facelift is referred to simply as S4 or by nickname urS4, S6 was 286bhp and S6 Plus was 322bhp special, built only in late '96 to '97. 855 estates and 97 saloons.

190 Evo? Don't recall even the more regular 190s having 4Matic, although there were some W124s
Agreed. I don't recall a 190 ever being 4wd. Anyone?
I suspect it was only the DTM cars that were

Were they? That's a new one on me. Did they experiment with it at some stage once the Audi V8s entered? I'd have thought they would have had to homologate the same

Some great cars mentioned on here, loving the fast Audis and Intergrale.

For me I would like to think my old girl is still a bit useful

Re the DTM

Once Audi and BMW had left Opel and Alfa entered with 4WD cars they'd homogolated. I see no reason why an existing entrant wouldn't use 4WD. That said the rules allowed 2.5 litre 6 cylinder motors and I don't think Mercedes-Benz changed from their 4 cylinder Cosworth.

Happy to be corrected. My Audi Avant experience was limited to a 2.8 V6 80 with a load of S2 and RS2 goodies but I was always close to buying an S2, then an S4, then an S6 then nearly an RS6 but I veered toward Buchloe and never looked back.

I'm partial to the Impreza/NotImpreza WRX STI, but then I am biased biggrin

The Evo's probably better though in the corners, though the offbeat H4 burble more than compensates.

I'd love an R35 GTR next, but think it may feel a bit anodyne after my car (though monumentally faster)

In what sense did it have a Jag v6 in it's MIDDLE?

They're kind of right. The 6R4 engine was based on the Rover V8 with two cylinders chopped off and very heavily revised. It eventually ended up in the XJ220 after being completely revised again. And to confuse things even more the metr 6r4 was in fact a maestro floorpan if memory serves.
