Shall we have a PH Top 100 - Best 4wd performance cars
Discussion
There are too many to mention for a Top100, as many of the latest generations of supercars, and even superhatches are all AWD, as you need the traction for the performance. We should also add the Tesla.
My personal AWD performance favourites are the rally Subaru Imprezas and Audi quattros. And Porsche 911 Carrera 4s and Turbos.

A thoroughbred performance car designed from scratch around 4wd, unlike many others - the Panther Solo
(Pic from drive-my.com )
Road tests at the time talked about amazingly good handling.
Handled beautifully, went well and looked good at the time. Build quality was awful though (Pic from drive-my.com )

I second the Bentley Continental GT Supersports one of the most complete all rounders money can buy though there have been many great cars posted (and a few not so great )

I like a bit of 4wd action so will put up my previous and current car :
Audi RS2 -
Another vote for the RS2Audi RS2 -
The Audi RS2 was one of the first, if not the first, performance estate car from a mainstream manufacturer and was astonishing for its time (I am sure there are some PHeadcases out there who will let me know what preceded it). The combination of performance and available space made it a really usable supercar. I thought they were incredible when they first came out and they are still pretty astonishing (0-100 kph in 4.8 seconds). The are becoming quite rare now though.
Think the E34 M5 Touring may have pre dated it in terms of performance estates but not sure when Audi first started knocking out the 'cooking' S2 Avant.
More relevant to the thread, I like the idea of these:
Alpina B10 3.0 Allrad E34 flavour. Can't be many of those about.

These are most definately bottom of the pile. dreadful in every respect, not that fast awful in anything other than a straight line, overweight, overcomplicated.
0-60 in 5.2 seconds not that fast?? The later models were much lighter and handled better (especially the mr versions). Plus they still look epic!tonyb1968 said:

Impreza S202, a limited run of 400 were made. A lighter faster Impreza.
This was the best colour they did the S202 in, beat the white, blue and black hands down and I remember there being one of these in Ashton Under Lyne back in 2002/3 when they came out (in this colour )To add to the list...
Subaru Impreza STI Spec C & Spec C RA.
Fantastic performance car and it took you back to basics for driving, owned 2 and loved them both but times move on unfortunately
The S202 is my favourite of the 4wd turbos' I've owned (most models of Evo, Impreza and Saphire and Escort Cosworths).
Regret selling this one:

There seem to be plenty of images of Group B cars in this thread, I don't recall 205 T16 E2's being being "production cars/freely available to the public", nor indeed a Quattro S1/2 ....
But on the basis the OP hasn't thrown his toys out of his pram for these blatant transgressions, I propose this :
Some would contend they looked better in WRC blue with 555 plastered all over them and a Scots bloke behind the wheel, strangely I didn't ....
Available to the public ? Yes (if your pockets were deep enough)
Production car ? Prodrive had quite a production line going back in 1997/8/9, they churned out a good few (34) of them in the process (though the aforementioned Scottish bloke did his best to keep the number of intact cars, low)
Road usable ? H*ll yeh, I drove it on the road on slicks with a handbrake arrangement that was distinctly illegal.
So what's the history behind that (them) then? But on the basis the OP hasn't thrown his toys out of his pram for these blatant transgressions, I propose this :

I've got personal interest in this thread. And I put my money where my mouth is!
Yup. Me too. The pic is not my car but is the closest and nicest I can find. It's near as dammit what mine looks like but my photography skills are a bit lacking... Reason? Proper full time awd, no driver aids like traction control, yaw control etc etc. It has abs and power steering. Why do you need more? And it is mentally quick with circa 350bhp and not a lot of weight. And it's before Mitsubishi went a bit mad with the styling. The vents and wing are functional. I once tried driving it enthusiastically with no wing. I put it back on very shortly afterward.
Mine on wash day with the daily:
