There must be about 100 variants of the Nissan GTR, right? In which case I vote as follows:

1. Nissan GTR
2. Nissan GTR V-Spec
3. Nissan GTR Nismo
.
.
.
100. Nissan GTR Black Edition

Legacy B4 / GT has to be in there for a decent daily driver.

Ford Raptor and Dodge Ram Runner (not sure if that one is series production but think you can buy the kit from dealers so could spec it)

Since we have had all the Audi barges. How about the AWD Merc E63

Would an AWD kit car count? Dax / Tiger etc?

My mistake. Missed the some kind part. Was going to post G60 based Golfs but didnt as were not AWD ! Now where are my pics ?

G60 limited

Love the Limited! I believe that they also did a number of 8v (non-Rallye) G60s with Syncro 4WD

Love the RS2. In Nogaro, yes please.

Think the E34 M5 Touring may have pre dated it in terms of performance estates but not sure when Audi first started knocking out the 'cooking' S2 Avant.

More relevant to the thread, I like the idea of these:

Alpina B10 3.0 Allrad E34 flavour. Can't be many of those about.
C4 S4 4.2 V8 Avant, albeit built in very limited numbers, I think pre-dates the RS2

Mitsubishi Evo 2.

They did a version 1, 2 & 3 all based on the same light bodyshell.

As a EVO guy I am a bit conflicted, but I would put the following two iconic 'production cars' firmly in the top ten:

Evo 6.5 Tommi Makkinen Edition

Subaru 22b.

But, if we have a 100 to choose from then I could add loads more from 50 downward:

Great thread as i am a big lover of performance 4wd! I drive an enhanced 2001 996 C4 c.3.4, lightwieght clutch & fly, quick silver exhaust carbon fibre large bore induction kit with twin, uprated brakes and suspension, custom re-map so lightweight and pushing out c.340bhp. i also own a stock 2004 b6 s4 4.2v8 avant for my wife and kid. Both superb cars for different reasons. 996 purchased for £11k and b6 s4 for £5.5k. At a meet my c4 beat a 996 gt2 off the line 2/3 times due to the 4wd and increased power, obviously the gt2 shot past it once we got going. i have owned powerful rear only cars, some with no electonic aids, and that feeling of driving in a heavy down poor with poor road drainage was always something i dreaded. big N/A performance, big grip, reliable and absolute bargains, both also benefits from old road tax rates. if these two dont make the top 100 the list is flawed!!

A thoroughbred performance car designed from scratch around 4wd, unlike many others - the Panther Solo

Road tests at the time talked about amazingly good handling.
Handled beautifully, went well and looked good at the time. Build quality was awful though frown
Yes, Andrew Frankel picked it ahead of the 944, MX5 and Caterham at the 1990 Autocar Handling Day

He's just bought a 968 as well so must have rated it at the time.

Always intrigued me how it was slower than the saloon car that most of the running gear came from though

Jeezuz I totally forgot the 918 is 4WD. That could be number 1, for its outright power, but also it's performance, and story behind it, difficulty coming to market etc.

1999/2000 Audi S4 B5 (16 years old and still modern looking. Still a fast car for it's age.) or RS4 B5 wide body, estate with 375bhp. Always wanted one of these.

2003 Volvo S60R (AWD 300bhp 2.5T 20V 5 Cylinder want more do you want. Mine one is making about 350BHP and I love these cars. They are proper sleeper cars.

Nissan R33 GTR (very tunable and always been my dream car.)

Mercedes A45 AMG (If I had the money would love to buy one these. Very fast, good MPG return and like the look of them.)

Always been a big fan of the Mitsubishi Evo IV

Nissan Pulsar GTIR (These are like over 20 years old now but still quick cars and even comes with an umbrella in your door smile if it ever rains.)

I think the ultimate 4WD performance car has to be the R35 GTR. There pretty much a supercar but faster and cheaper than a Ferrari, Lambo etc...

Ah. Oops! That!

Evo 2 GSR. RS is more hardcore but rarer than rocking horse wotsit. As I'm sat here watching my 2yo little girl on her rocking horse, I can categorically state that I have never seen it defecate.

Constantly surprises me how small it actually is! My Clio is bigger. My other halfs Cooper S is bigger. A Fiesta is bigger! And the Evo still has 4 doors and a decent sized boot. It's a practical family car. Honest!

You should check the prices they are fantastic value at the moment. If that's a stretch don't discount the GTST's either, I'm biased because I have one but the handling and power is still incredible given the ages of the cars. Some people say that GTST's are more fun to drive because you can easily hit the same power as a GTR but the steering isn't corrupted by the 4WD. I suspect they couldn't quite stretch to a GTR though wink For me, I'd like them both!!

Odd to see the new Focus RS making the list, surely not too many have driven them enough yet to judge ??

I'm guessing not many people on here have driven a 959, RS200, Veyron or 205 T16, either.

Me too! Can't believe I didn't think of it. The 918 has to win, surely?

Indeed you can get Mk2 Golf Syncros in G60/GTI 8v/1.8 Carb format. MK3 Golfs were available with syncro with 1.8GL/TDI/VR6 engines.

That Alpina is FANTASTIC, didn't know about those!

Of the E34 gens I was only aware of the 525IX model.

These must also warrant a mention.
