Without inferring any fault or blame, I find myself pondering how a "show your speed" option made it past the "will it get us sued because of spacktards" team any large corporation especially in 'merica has. There is an air of inevitability about this. Maybe when deadweights make up the majority of your clients you just accept a few sues as being part of the business, in a manner not far removed from ford deciding exploding petrol tanks being cheaper to pay out on than recall and fix?

IMO it's the fault of the youtube/instagram "celebrities". The successful ones act like they're completely normal teenagers living a normal life with a normal family... And yet they blow hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on luxuries, high end make-up, travel, cars, etc.
Normal teenagers who don't yet understand the value of money, see them and think "They're a normal teenager, I'm a normal teenager, but they're so much happier than me and have so much more stuff than me... Why isn't my life like that? Something's wrong with me."

They need to recognise the damage they're doing to vulnerable young people and be honest with "My parents are very wealthy, I don't live a normal lifestyle, I am extremely lucky to have these opportunities and it doesn't make me better than anyone else"

[/rant]

The idiot driver above who caused permanent damage to an innocent family should spend the rest of her life in their debt. It wasn't an accident and is 100% her fault.

+1 mate. I absolutely loathe this "selfie" culture. When did people become so pathetically self-absorbed? I must admit, I feel like I have an inner-battle to restrain myself from shoving their phones where the sun don't shine every time I see another sad little cow taking a photo of themselves. Everyone wants to be a celebrity these days....
People have always taken pictures of themselves and before photographs if you were rich enough you had portraits painted of you and your family. Go into any stately home and you will see walls filled with portraits.

Selifies is not about wanting to be a celebrity at all, I regularly do selfies with my kids. It's a bit of fun for us to share with the family.

I'm glad you show self restraint because to be quite honest it's none of your fking business what other people do.

northing wrong with the odd self portrait photo but it has got out of hand, I have friends whose daughters post photos of themselves, admittedly they are pretty girls but it does seem to meet with a chorus of "Gorgeous Hun" which makes me vomit, one posts her photos and makes a facial expression I have never, ever seen her make in real life, I call her Zoolander when she does that, the other one cocks her head to one side and tries to look a bit "kooky" and adorable, just looks a bit like a confused spaniel to me.

Its mainly women and to be honest, it isnt attractive, a candid and natural pot of them smiling or laughing is much nicer, not one that makes you look like you are trying to look sexy whilst crimping one off.

As for snapchat being sued, may as well sue the phone manufacturer, the car maker, the road builders etc, I have a chainsaw but I dont cut peoples toenails with it, point being, it isnt what you can do with a given item, it is what you do do with it, you know personal responsibility, common sense but I guess if you are called "Christal", then you are off to a bad start one way or the other, people sue based on stuff like this and then complain when every company stops anyone doing anything fun or exciting to remove any possible danger and subsequent legal and financial danger, then complain about Health and Safety gone mad.

Dont do stupid st, if you do, take responsibility for it, it is ok to say it was your fault, sometimes the buck stops with you, "Christal"

As evidenced by your own response Cheesesliceking. Had Devil 2575 beeen talking about social media generally, then yes, his comment would have been ironic. As it was, I don't think there was any irony as his selfies were for his own personal use.

Bugger me, the Dali Llama has appeared.
On the right track though - phones that do more than make and receive calls haven't added much of value to society as far as I can see.
You need to get out of that cave you live in then, pronto.

Indeed.

Smart phones are brilliant.

Instant access to the internet and GPS in most places mean that if I get lost I can quickly find out where I am and how to get to where I need to be.
I can find a branch of a shop in any town I visit and I can check prices with competitors quickly before I buy.

Access to social media is a brilliant. I can share photos with family instantly and for free, I can see if people are online and have a live conversation with them over facebook messenger. Last summer while on holiday my wife was rushed into hospital. As we were away with our kids I had to keep the holiday going for their sake. At one point my youngest wanted to share something with mummy and we were able to make a video call to my wife in hospital. No only was this good for the kids it also helped to make my wife feel better as she was constantly in touch with us. I can quickly share videos and photos with family in far flung places so much easier than before.

When I here people complaining about stuff like this all I can think is that you must just be miserable tts who can't stand change and would find something to complain about no matter what. Just because some idiots do stupid things doesn't mean that all of it is bad.

Despite your little rant at me above, you weren't the type of person I was referring to, and I agree, smartphones are great. Sometimes it's the people they're attached to that leave a lot to be desired....

Like anything, it's down to the user. Hammers are great. You can cave someone's head in with them. OTOH some dullards like to use hammers to bang nails into wood and build sheds.

I didn't think I was. My point was that if someone chooses to take a selfie it's their business. It was your suggestion that you have to contain yourself from shoving the phone up their arse. Why? I see things that I wouldn't do myself all the time, but I accept that people are free to do what they want and if that includes posting selfies of themselves pouting on social media then so be it. It doesn't affect me so I can easily ignore it. It certainly isn't indicative of the decline of modern society.

I'm human. Certain things get on my nerves. This is one of them. My problem I appreciate, but I'm far from alone in my dislike of people who love themselves just a little too much..... Like the waste of space who this thread is about, a selfies from a stretcher, really?!

Perhaps the oddity is that relatively few states in USA, including Georgia, prohibit use of hand-held devices while driving. Check out the Wikipedia link below,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restrictions_on_cell...

Insofar as under 18s are often prohibited from using them, bear in mind that the usual age to start driving in USA varies between age 14 and age 16. Yes, there really are states where you can drive for 7 years before you're allowed to have a drink (age 21).

They've always existed. It's just that modern technology has brought them into our lives and homes when in the past we just wouldn't ever come into contact with them. That's the real difference, modern media has made them visible.
