Despite your little rant at me above, you weren't the type of person I was referring to, and I agree, smartphones are great. Sometimes it's the people they're attached to that leave a lot to be desired....
They've always existed. It's just that modern technology has brought them into our lives and homes when in the past we just wouldn't ever come into contact with them. That's the real difference, modern media has made them visible.
It has but they're quite easily ignored.

What you really need is a smartphone propped on the dash so you can watch Jersey Shore. Now that's progress.

Actually I hope snapchat get found liable. App manufacturers that make pointless st that is obviously going to lead to something like this need to be held to account. They will just say "oh we had no idea" but to any sensible adult they could see what would happen

In much the same way that selling alcohol in pubs and bars with a car park "obviously" leads to death by drunken driving...

Why is communicating with people you know on social media worse than communicating with people you don't know on Pistonheads?

Some people will stereotype her as a typical female driver, a typical young driver or a typical Mercedes driver. Anti motorist types would lump her and us together as motorists. The fact is she exercised poor judgment by doing something any rational person would deem dangerous. It doesn't mean that the tools with which she brought about the accident are dangerous or bad for society in themselves.

The Internet and social media has brought worldwide society together and, whilst it gives idiots a mouthpiece and it scares me to see how stupid and prejudiced some people are, it's generally made people more aware and tolerant of each other and brought wider society together. It's been a huge benefit to society.

There always have been stupid and dimwitted people. It's not something new that's been brought about by the Internet or smart phones or social media.

oh ok. Look, there is no plausible way no one at SnapChat coming up with this app couldn't forsee what some "neck nominate" bellends would get up to and to suggest otherwise is just plain daft.

I hope something comes of this, app manufacturers have to start to accept responsibility for their apps. As for the alcohol analogy, try something a bit more befitting. The law and everyone knows drinking is not intended for driving so liability is with the drink driver. Now what on earth would a snapchat your speed app be for? Look I'm on a plane (cannot use on planes), look I'm on a train, a bus, running down the street? This was only ever going to go one way, idiots driving.

Indeed.

Smart phones are brilliant.

Instant access to the internet and GPS in most places mean that if I get lost I can quickly find out where I am and how to get to where I need to be.
I can find a branch of a shop in any town I visit and I can check prices with competitors quickly before I buy.

Access to social media is a brilliant. I can share photos with family instantly and for free, I can see if people are online and have a live conversation with them over facebook messenger. Last summer while on holiday my wife was rushed into hospital. As we were away with our kids I had to keep the holiday going for their sake. At one point my youngest wanted to share something with mummy and we were able to make a video call to my wife in hospital. No only was this good for the kids it also helped to make my wife feel better as she was constantly in touch with us. I can quickly share videos and photos with family in far flung places so much easier than before.

When I here people complaining about stuff like this all I can think is that you must just be miserable tts who can't stand change and would find something to complain about no matter what. Just because some idiots do stupid things doesn't mean that all of it is bad.

That didn't read right. We're going to continue enjoying our holiday whilst you're ill in hospital love, but social media will make it ok.
Only good social networking is down the pub smile

As for selfies, it's amazing how many people you spot taking selfies in ridiculously dangerous positions.

To be fair, it's amazing how many people don't perish from what should be non-dangerous activity's such as crossing a road because they can't stop ibooking their facefone for 5 fking seconds.

I genuinely don't understand how we haven't seen a rise in fatalities.

What a lot of pish, it's not made for the driver while he's driving; she's a fecking idiot and would have been quite capable of crashing using a 35mm camera to record her doing 70mph in 1950.

The root is idiocy, not the technology used by the idiot.

If you produce something that is capable of exposing and benefitting from a craze of idiocy, you should be liable in part for either enabling it or not foreseeing what some bell ends would do with it. To anyone with an ounce of grey matter they could see this being used in such a way.

Er....that's anything; anything and everything can, has and will be misused by idiots to their own demise or sadly to the demise of others as in this case.

If you start blaming the makers of things for their mis/abuse you'd have the car maker on the stand for making a vehicle that goes above the speed limit...

What purpose did this app feature serve? How did the app makers foresee it furthering the use of their main app? By bell ends trying to snapchat themselves at speed and lets face it, Dave wont be on the train or on the plane if its to get any traction.

It warns people not to do it when driving. It's for the pax, not the idiot behind the wheel. This is so obvious that it shouldn't need a warning, but they did anyway.

The driver was an idiot, plain and simple. Don't blame the doughnut for you getting fat by eating too many of them...
