I don't buy all the F1 hype. They built very few - if you take out the ones crashed and used for racing, it leaves a tiny number - then it turns out that most, like this one, have hardly ever been driven. Legendary? Irrelevant!
Well that is a pretty amazing comment. Completely missed the point of the F1 and your comment is really only relevant when considering the price because there are not that many.

Never get tired or articles about the F1.

Smaller, lower cd value, more luggage space, more passengers than the P1. 240mph from a normally aspirated engine and the beautiful result of the work of several very talented people. That is even before considering the Le Mans success in 1995.

Still completely relevant today and in good company compared to the current crop of Super / Hyper cars.

I have the book on this car in the house on a shelf somewhere, and it has been read many, many times. If I had the monies to buy and most importantly run this car I would definitely get it, and enjoy it. The driving force behind this car Gordon Murray still owns XP5 as far as I know, and enjoys it as much as he can!

I would have to take some very advanced driver's training to enjoy it, but I bet it would be worth it just to hear that Paul Rosche engine sing it's V12 song...

The LM kit transforms the plain looks of the car into what it should have been all along, not a fan of the rear wing but its needed to balance the front.

A car of its time.

An odd one, because as much as I'd want to, I'd be too frightened to drive the bloody thing! As much as we wish somebody will purchase it and actually use it as intended, I really cannot see that happening - it's a museum car for a collector (which I do not condone in any way, these car collectors are a strange species). Shame really..

I'd rather have the one McLaren will never, ever sell, XP5. Last time EVO had it it was coming up on 100k miles, I wonder has it passed it yet? Do you know Max?
Trigger's broom? No thanks! It's looking a lot healthier these days but I'd much rather have this one. It's a very pretty thing.

It's a shame the prices have gone so stratospheric on these. When the value is so high it becomes the most important quality. The F1 is so much more than that.

I guess this shows the difference between people who aspire to be, or are already, millionaires (virtually all of PH) and billionaires who can afford to drop £14m and not even think about it.

If I was a billionaire I'd use it all the time.
Someone posted above that even if they were a billionaire they couldn't use it. Why not? I'd drive it to the tip if I wanted to with that kind of wealth behind me.
That's the difference. To be a billionaire you think like a billionaire, to dream of being one gives us mere mortals a different perspective on things. Dream cars don't exist with that kind of wealth, they're simply possessions and as such you'd treat them like buying a focus.

With regard the F1, it was the pinnacle of what was possible at the time but in standard trim never did anything for me personally, that was until I saw the GTR version...

Just look at it!

The likelihood of a true petrol head buying this is slim to fk all. Someone will buy it as an investment.

But, if a petrol head were weathy enough to buy it, I'm sure that person could afford to put the miles on it.

I appreciate these for what they are and that Top Gear episode with Tiff smoking the tyres out of a corner will always live with me, but to be honest the styling always left me cold. It doesn't tug at the heartstrings like an F40, which is where my money would go. Shame it's done so few miles..

Yes ?

And I most definitely would, I like the whole ethos of this machine, its simply the best (or at least was) it could be without nannying the driver.

Leagues ahead of its time as a design package and still is.A Concorde moment for McLaren,as much as I admire the the P1 the original F1 is light years ahead in the desirability stakes for me.

Well quite. You don't become a billionaire by spunking away multi-million pound assets willy-nilly. At least, if you do then you don't stay a billionaire for very long.

It's not 'worth too much to drive' if you're a billionaire or have, let's say, a good £100 million.
If you have that amount, why care about its resale value? You never have to sell it.
But then the very rich don't become very rich without thinking that £130 million is a lot better than £110 million, the idiots.
So, it'll be a status symbol/investment.
Still can't understand why Rowan Atkinson sold his - what are you going to do with the extra millions?

I definitely would, and would want to use it if I had it. But it would be for special occasions only I suspect to ensure it stayed very special. Hopefully there would be lots of special occasions!

I doubt it has done many miles but he did say that he drove it fairly regularly to understand the ethos or something when they were developing the 12C.

Prices are just ridiculous, to the point where you'll be unlikely to see one on the street, let alone getting spanked. They're just investment fodder.

One of my fave car related memories is being at the Nurburgring GP track testing (I was a gopher for a Formula Opel Euroseries team) when the West McLaren F1 team rocked up. I was stood drooling by the garage and they let me in to watch (and hear!) them fire up. I don't have the words to try and convey just what an incredible cacophony of sound it was. A few weeks later, I saw a street version leaving Silverstone. (Jonathon Palmer I think? or Les Battersby) and nail it in 2nd and 3rd.

Even today the F1 can hold its own against modern super cars and it still looks fantastic. (to me anyway). smile

If I was a billionaire and this was pocket change to me, I'd probably just add it to my collection and drive it occasionally. If I was a millionaire with 10 million to spend on cars I don't think this would get a look in to be honest, maybe as an investment but I'd feel bad about using something so special in that way. I'd rather spend the money on a selection of cars I would actually be able to use and many would be pretty special in their own right. Pagani Zonda for example.

Unfortunately I am neither a billionaire or a millionaire so all of the above is irrelevant frown

GM has 001. Worth a few bob I bet. Mind you he regularly drives it, so it has miles on the clock.

A certain middle eastern chap offered him a LOT for it a few years back. He didn't sell (and I'm sure never will).

How sad that such a great car has been driven so little....
