IMHO this is what I personally classify as a genuine hot hatch:
1. Small sized three door body shell.
(If that body is also available as a five door elsewhere it does not count).
2. The most powerful engine for that small body shell is fitted.
3. Unlikely anymore, but in my heart I consider anything under 1000kg to be a gold star rated hot hatch. The 106GTI at 850kg is amazing in this respect. To bring that up to date now, I'd be very generous and set that limit to 1100kg to cover 100kg of safety crap. (Anything approaching or beyond 1200kg is a lard arse family wagon).
Again, IMHO. I'm done
I'm glad you are done, there are far too many errors with those criteria. 1. Small sized three door body shell.

According to your own criteria the original hot hatch is not one because you could get a 5 door Golf.. The mk1 Golf GTI got the 1.6L engine, not the larger 1.8 or 2.0 that were also available at the time & would physically fit into the bay.
And a 106 GTI with all it's electric gubbins & leather seats weights far far closer to 1000kg than it ever does 850kg...
Anyhow the Focus RS, very much a hot hatch, actually more of a hyper hatch if the Golf R/AMG45 are it's natural competitors.

Don't think they offered a 2.0l in the Mrk1 Golf ?
The original mk1 Golf GTI was created when some engineers at VW decided it would be interesting to put a 1.6 Audi 8v engine into a Golf as part of a late night project...Audi larger capacity lumps available which the engineers could potentially have got the hands on, if anyone has tried a 2.0l mk1 Golf they know it's AMAZING!
Oh, K-link, cracking effort with the Porsches

Hot Hatch should only have 3 doors but....... PCP/lease has allowed people who should be up to their necks in nappies and mortgage repayments into cars they can't afford to own!
Tongue in cheek but may have some truth in it.
Wondered how long before finance was mentioned.Tongue in cheek but may have some truth in it.
Most will be on finance etc etc etc....yawn..so what!!!
Il await the following next.....
It's not RWD?
All VAG products are bland?
How much for a fast ford?

So in conclusion I am apparently wrong. Therefore it seems the Porsche Panamera is indeed a hot hatch after all. It is the smallest and lightest four seater car they make: designed to haul a family around, yet has a sporting edge. Apparently the number of doors, weight, dimensions and price never come into it anymore. I am glad we cleared that all up.
Moving on...
Yes, thats it, because a Panamera is in fact, a Ford Focus rival Moving on...
Sad you cant just admit you're wrong.

Christ nearly 5 pages devoted to the definition of a hot hatch. Who cares? I don't.
Anyway back to the focus RS, whilst looking around it I noticed there is no vertical adjustment for seat height. I had a sit in a focus ST as well. I actually preferred the seats in that to the optional extra recaros that were in the rs.
Each to there own.
Like I posted earlier, give it a few years and let the prices of used ones come down and I might be tempted but not an 18 month wait an no discount at all.
On another note. Does anyone think the prices of the mk2 will drop now the latest model is out.
