M135i or GT86?
Discussion
I had a similar list when looking for my car. We have a family car for the practical duties so I just needed something to get me to work and back which is mainly A roads and not much fun. I fancied the GT86 but my previous 325 felt a little slow and I suspected I'd regret getting one for that reason. If my commute involved more back roads then I'd have probably went for one.
I was interested in a Cayman but the ownership costs and possible bork factor on a slightly older car put me off. I went for a new M135i in the end and I'm glad I did. It's fun enough when I do find a nice road, even with the aports auto. Overall, it suited my needs the most. It's got some nice toys, comfortable and even in sport mode, it's a much nicer ride than my old 3 series. It's maybe not as focused as some cars I'd looked at but as an all rounder, it's brilliant. Not the best looking car in the world but the engine is epic and puts a smile on my face every time I decide to go past traffic.

As much as I admire the ethos behind the GT86, I wouldn't buy one. I'm a totally underwhelmed by the performance even though they can look nice in the right colour. If it's rear wheel drive you're after you don't need a GT86 for that so the BMW would get my vote out of those two particular cars.
