st.
The car had just had its MOT done.
I wonder how this will play out with the seller... I only paid the deposit so far.
Reason(s) for failure
nearside rear Parking (secondary) brake grabbing severely (3.7.D.3b)
offside rear Parking (secondary) brake grabbing severely (3.7.D.3b)
offside Headlamp aim beam image obviously incorrect (1.8.A.1b)
nearside rear Anti-roll bar rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)
offside Steering rack gaiter split (2.2.D.2d)
Advisory notice item(s)
nearside front Front wheel bearing has slight play (2.5.A.3c)
Looks like a bush, a gaiter and and some fiddling to me. Not the end of the world...The car had just had its MOT done.

So the good gentleman spent £320 getting the car ready for me - service B, MOT, plus the rubber bits.I had a test drive, 10 miles with the top down, at 9pm. WOW :-)
I love the V6 noise, past 4k rpm it's great to listen to :-)
Suspension rock hard, and the heating smells of something nasty - needs a clean. But other than that - one happy camper :-)
Small update. The Avantgarde suspension.
Great and solid on straight in corners, but manhole covers and potholes are very crashy, even dropped kerbs are very noticeable.
Plus annoying window rattle all around, with top up or down. Lowering windows a few mm helps.
I guess I can't have everything....
Still, even the little people enjoy it. I was doing fun rides yesterday for friend's kids lol. And what a spectacle the roof folding was!

For your budget I'd aim for an A4 1.8T 2WD manual and hope the roof module is good. Generally bullet proof engine wise and lower miles normally compared to same price diesel. Go ok too.
As I own an A4 1.8T 2wd Auto I would beg to differ.... Mine has 96K on the clock and has had the following issues in the last few months :1)Thirst for oil, not sure if it burns it, leaks or a combination of the two.
2)Low oil pressure due to sludging, had to drop the sump and replace the oil pickup
3)Failed 02 sensor (not really an issue to be honest)
4)CEL is on with a boost leak failure.
Apparently the Multitronic gearbox is made of chocolate but mine has been fine so far. The engine on the other hand has been nothing but trouble.
I also had an A6 with the same engine and that died when it dumped all it's coolant on the motorway at 117K miles
I personally think the 1.8T engine is terrible and I would not buy any VAG car with this engine.
It is very windy sitting in the back, so expect children to moan about being cold pretty much instantly.
my kids love sitting in the back with the roof down (4 and 8 year old)
Mine feels quite fast, in a cruzy kind on way and the handling is fine.
My big problem is that in everything costs so much money to fix. In the time (5 years) I have had mine I have had:
DMFW (x2 first one lasted a year): £1400 each.
Window regulator: £300
Steering rack: £300 (I forget if this was a complete replacement or just a fix)
Fuel pump (left me stranded) forget cost
Last full service with cam belt and brake disks and pads: £1400
Blowing exhaust (oddly blowing from BOTH flexys after the manifold. got 3 quotes to replace the section all at around £1000 (one place quoted that for just one side!). went with the £400 option of welding in new flexy sections and now my exhaust sounds crap!!!!
I think that this year alone, I have spent 1.5 times the value of the car, just keeping it on the road, already.
Oh, and now my rear screen is coming away from the cloth and filling the passenger foot well with water.
It could be something as simple as the rear windows needing a new rubber seals where they meet the front windows.
If it makes the noise when you shut the doors then it's the front window mechanism & this stems from people shutting the doors with the windows rather than the handles it bends/breaks the clips or in some cases the rivets.
Or check the alignment when the windows are closed make sure the rear windows aren't coming up to far.

No, the rear screen in the soft top....is coming un glued from the cloth. Simple fix, but getting the silicon glue has taken a very rainy month already,If it makes the noise when you shut the doors then it's the front window mechanism & this stems from people shutting the doors with the windows rather than the handles it bends/breaks the clips or in some cases the rivets.

Thanks, I'll have a poke around. If it makes the noise when you shut the doors then it's the front window mechanism & this stems from people shutting the doors with the windows rather than the handles it bends/breaks the clips or in some cases the rivets.

On the Merc forums they have mentioned some missing nuts or bolts inside the door itself.
BTW, I am so clever. I managed to smash the windscreen when replacing the wipers.... Turned out the wiper was partially broken off, and just came away from the arm on its own - which then snapped the screen very hard, leaving an 8 inch crack. Ooooops.
I can't say I felt good, but a new windscreen for £75 (via insurance) - could be worse

Sounds like you need a white Golf on a lease... QuantumTokoloshi said:

I have my two children in the back of mine, a 7 & 9 year old, and they are fine for journeys under an hour. The main issue is the wind buffeting at higher speeds. Space wise, they are fine, even with the hardtop on. cat220 said:
