Looking at getting a Chelsea Tractor for the 1.4mile school run (as you do wink ), but really don't like losing money in depreciation. X5/6, RRS, type thing.
Budget is less important than depreciation but I was thinking IRO £40-50k for something up to around 2yrs old. I'm conscious that you can get a new X5 for the price of a 1yr old one.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Buy a new X5, sell it after a year. You have answered your own question wink

I am sure somebody will be along to say that's not the case though.

Buy a Porsche Cayenne, put some GT3 badges on it and double your money.

What a depressing thread. But I'll join in anyway...

Audi Q5 seems to be quite cast iron in terms of depreciation resistance. I'd recommend a white 4cyl diesel one with the obligatory S-Line trim of course.

buy an actual tractor - with that mileage (hours) it shouldn't lose much money at all

1.4 miles?

You know the answer is to walk, of course, so what else will the car be used for?

I'm not sure that works so well when you're selling, for some reason! biggrin

At some point in the future, your 50 grand cars value will be based on its weight. If you buy a £500 snotter, you can only ever loose 500 quid.

I can think of 1 or 2 exceptions to that 'rule'...

Such as? There are no volume cars that won't get scrapped in the future. Spend 50 grand on a Discovery, Range Rover, X5 or whatever and one day it will be driven onto the weigh bridge at the scrap yard and weighed in. No ifs, no buts.

I have just sold a Cayenne that cost me 7k over 2 years in depreciation which I thought was ok! My mate bought a RR sport that cost him 12k over the same amount of time! I'd bet on the Merc GLC on costing less than the rest.

Classic Range Rovers aren't doing too badly value wise, even wrecks are at a grand or two with decent examples going for much more.
