Define Hot Hatch
Discussion
A model of car that is (for the model as a whole) generally at the cheaper and mass-production end of the market* that has a (subjective) high performance for that class of car at the time of its production. The car may or may not retain the level of practicality associated with the class.
*This is not the same as the technical meaning of 'hatchback' in that it excludes high value/exotic cars (e.g Aston Martin) and larger cars that would be considered in the same class as saloons (e.g. Mondeo, 3/5 GT).

Hot hatch (shortened from hot hatchback) is a high-performance derivative of a car body style consisting of a three- or five-door hatchback automobile.
Seems pretty accurate to me.Edited by daemon on Monday 2nd May 15:52

seats 4-5 adults
has a hatchback
pokey engine must be transverse
spoilers
front wheel drive or front biased four wheel drive
small or mid size european body
Cars that are not hot hatches by that definition:has a hatchback
pokey engine must be transverse
spoilers
front wheel drive or front biased four wheel drive
small or mid size european body
Golf GTi (most marks, depending on spoiler definition, definitely Mk1 & 2)
Golf R32 (depending on spoiler definition)
M135i
Peugeot 205 GTi
Clio V6
Clio 172 & 197 (182 and 200 also, depending on spoiler definition)
Civic Type R EP3 (depending on spoiler definition)
Escort RS Cosworth
Now fair enough, you may want to exclude some of those (I'm not sure if I'd class the Escort as a hot hatch or not, I just threw it in there, and I know the Clio V6 divides opinions), but the early Golfs not hot hatches? Nor the 205?
ETA: the Golf 7R is also on shaky ground, depending on that spoiler definition.

Simple,
Hot hatch is a performance orientated hatchback that is designed to be significantly faster than the standard models in the range. Possibly compromised with respect to ride and subtlety, but designed to be used daily.
A warm hatch is a performance orientated model that is not necessarily fast, but often quicker than an average car.
A hyper hatch is a ridiculously fast model that will keep sports cars and even some supercars honest.
