I mean this in the nicest possible way, but if those choices still take prime position on your list, then you clearly have a preference for them. So I think suggesting anything else is pointless.

Go out, try those four and buy the one you prefer driving. Simples.
It's not necessarily preference it's just that those ones I've done the most research on so far and have checked insurance for, I'm working my way through the list (apart from the BRABUS because I owned one before) so I still like a lot of them. The one I'm looking at now is the Copen to see what the damage would be to my wallet

I'm not sure there are any questions answered by the FTO that aren't better answered by the Integra Type-R or (if you want something newer) the RX-8

Any comment on the V6 MX-3 that I mentioned? It's quite similar in principle to the FTO

Good shout the MX3 but I'm not a huge fan on the styling and one of my main criteria is it has to look good to me; it's not ugly just not quite right. The FTO nails it however in that department and I can't believe I forgot about it until now, probably because I rarely see them (duh that's the whole idea)

Oh... The Corolla, but at the same time don't forget the fact the Cougar is based off a Mondeo, the Puma is a fiesta, the Crossfire is an SLK and the BRABUS has the engine from a Smart ForTwo

So the underpinnings aren't always that important

Not really.. It has a 1.6 20v 4 pot engine that a previous gen JDM Corolla has. It's a characterful engine. It also has super strut suspension which again sets it apart.

They were popular in Ireland throughout the 00s. That might be the best place to find one.

Oh, well. There we go... It must be god's gift to motoring history, then.

Whatever the fk "super strut suspension" means.

Very angry individual here.. Why don't you give a quick google instead?

Anyway, it fits the OPs criteria perfectly.. He's not heard of one.. And they do look good, unlike the Corolla you posted.

You also selectively left out my comment about the interesting engine

Children, children, calm down and play nicely.

No, not really. Cynical, rather than angry - somebody who doesn't particularly fall for marketing buzzword bullst.

Thanks for the explanation in your own words, which so neatly explains your understanding of the benefits.

<quick google>

Meh. It's just a Mac strut with an extra balljoint or two at the bottom, to keep the camber roughly constant across wider suspension travel. I can see the point for rallying, for which it was apparently developed, but it seems a bit pointless on a lowered-and-stiffened chavmobile. And it was apparently quickly dropped because of reliability problems.

Re-reading, I will admit to having read it as a 16v 2.0, rather than a 20v 1.6. But it's still a straight-four 1.6 Toyota engine carried forward from the previous Corolla - but with an extra valve per cylinder (just like a 1920s Peugeot, but with fewer camshafts). Or a VW Passat. All that new technological ground broken! How can I cope with having missed out?

I don't want to get in to an argument. The OP asked for different, not groundbreaking, technologically advanced or even good.
That's what I suggested. Hope that's okay.

What's your suggestion toomany2CVs?

Sure, but then you used those particular bits of spec-sheet-wk to support why this particular Corolla coupe was so much better than any other Corolla. I merely questioned that...

What's my suggestion? My suggestion is that the OP's list is so ridiculously wide that he clearly doesn't have a clue what he actually wants, so there's no point in even trying. But, hey, you know that, having read the thread, right?

Again, I'm not saying they are better, just different. This is what the OP has asked for. Do you always swear when talking to people in the real world?

Anyway, I'm trying to contribute and you are clearly not. I bet you're having fun knocking others though :-)

The first time I drove one of these many years ago, I thought what might this be, a Corolla coupe? No feck me it was like a rabid dog. Hilarious fun for a fwd car, from when Toyota started the whole washing machine car industry.

Very similar to a hot Clio in the way they go & steer without the French bits hehe
