there's a reason why people post interior pics of the 612 not exterior, one of the ugliest Ferraris made for decades wink

I'll take a Rapide S thanks
OK - each to their own but I couldn't let that just sit there. And with the weather today it's a good excuse to fire her up. The perfect GT, IMHO.

Lots of wonderful GT cars here. The Gran Tourismo is fantastic but my cousin gets 14mpg from his so you would need a 30 gallon tank to make the range. Was very impressed with the Jag XJ-R that Harry Metcalfe has just done a review on over at Harry's Garage. Getting near 35mpg on a long run from a supercharged 550hp monster is remarkable. Great interior, lovely chassis, superlative body control and fantastic engine. Add a year or two's initial depreciation and you have a continent munching drivers car for posh A6 diesel money.
When you consider most are only getting 38/39 on a run from the diesel it does make you wonder why we are so obsessed with diesel.

Wasn't his long term average in it showing as 29mpg as well, which is also stunning.
Think that's right. I do have a big soft spot for a good diesel engine but with cylinder shut down, accurate fueling and galactic top gear ratios there is no doubt the petrol GT is fighting back. Then when the mood takes you there is instant power insanity and gone are the short range woes of many a petrol behemoth.

Well, for me it really has to be a Ferrari V12. Modern enough to be fast and comfortable.
Classics are great (as you an guess from my ID) but it's a different type of driving, slower basically, and hotter.
So an elegant Maranello, a 550 or 575M would be ideal.

More controversially I believe it has to be Left Hand Drive.
The UK is not for grand touring, England at least is too small.
A GT car needs to be comfortable and hence quite wide. So LHD is a real advantage on the narrow roads of say, the Italian lakes. Overtaking is necessary too, one doesn't want to be stuck behind the freight on a route nationale depending on the significant other to shout "go !".
Finally I like the sheer decadence of having a car solely for the yearly tour.
Grand !

"Are we there yet?"
Or "how many more minutes"?

I have found that taking a car he likes and making the drive 'interesting' seems to work laugh

I do not know if it has already been mentioned, but a Lotus Evora S or 400 fits the bill perfectly. Very comfortable, plenty of space, good sound, strong performance, amazing handling, decent running costs...need I go on? I know there are better GT`s that are more luxurious or a bit faster on an Autobahn, and the likes of Ferrari or Maserati make a better sound, but I can guarantee the Lotus will outdrive them from a dynamic experience point of view (never mind pure dynamics), but still be a very comfortable place to be.

Another thought.
Grand Touring is about you and her, if you take the kids (even in something quite flash) its not grand touring, its a family holiday.

Absolutely! The M6 GC isn't a sports car, it's way too heavy. But it's a brilliant mile muncher and fits all the OPs requirements especially if you add the competition pack.

It has to be quick - 0-60 in sub 5 seconds Check, about 4.0sec.
It has to fast - 160mph + Check, stock it's limited to about 160, easily derestricted to 200mph +
It has to be comfortable and spacious for 2 people, with enough luggage space for a week Check, space for 4 if needed or you can fold the rear seats if there's only 2 of you.
It has to have a good range! 400 miles as a minimum. You won't always be needing that long range, but it's incredibly frustrating to fill up ever 200 miles. Check, you can easily get 400 miles out of the 80L tank, if you're on a long run 500 is not out of the question even if motoring on. This is possible

extrapolate to a full tank and you'll get nearly 530 miles between fills at 80mph.
It needs to sound good through a tunnel Check, quite quiet inside with the windows up so not tireing on a very long drive, but open the windows in a tunnel and it's pretty good, esp with the CP exhaust or more so if you go M Performance or Akra.
It needs to have good looks - nothing too edgy or racy, but equally not too bland Check, well, I like it anyway!

He must be doing all his driving in town, I had the MC Shift version which has shorter gearing than the full auto and could easily get 24mpg on a run. I was a great car, I loved the MC box and was well impressed with how quiet, stable and comfortable it was at an indicated 170mph on the Autobahn.
They are not cheap to run but running costs are not too bad for what is essentially a Ferrari, 12k mile/2 year service intervals help a lot.

I always found the Cerbera comfortable on long runs but if it's hot you boil to death and if it's raining and cold you can't see where you are going because the wipers/heater blowers are both pants...so not ideal.

Have a 640d and it's a cracking cruiser but the engine ruins most of the pleasure of driving it though, my vote would be a nice 850 CSi or a 928 GTS.
Take the cats out and the cabins fine. Wipers are adequate, blower depends on which model, my 97 seems ok at demisting.
Biggest thing against it would be fuel economy.
The blower on my 98 model was pretty poor and when it was cold and raining you only had a small area of the windscreen to look through and the rest of it was steamed up(mine did have A/C but it didn't work!).

Fuel economy wise I thought it was pretty good and it's relative light weight helped with that a fair bit and I ran a x5 4.8 alongside it for a while and that made the Cerbera seem extremely good on fuel in comparison for sure.

OK, not a V8 but has all the poke and noise
Took mine down to Monaco, Lake Como, through Switzerland, up to Paris and home in 10 days. All with my then 11 year old. Camped, F1'd (grim!) and generally had a blast in an Esprit that had already done 110,000 miles.
So, no, not really unreliable if they are maintained properly.

The V8 sounds great

Hugely appealing but don't these cars have an awful reputation for being unreliable?

To me it is the Ferrari 599. Epic V12 and they look stunning even today. If they had a 7 speed dual clutch gearbox like the 458 onwards, they would be utterly perfect. However, I think they are quite colour sensitive so this is what I would go for

Failing that, I pick the F13 M6 coupe.

To my it looks better than the Gran Coupe (just my opinion) and still has space for 4 adults, lots of luggage and can get perhaps squeeze 500 out of a tank (80 litre tank) on a long cruise at 70/80mph.

The 612 definitely gets metioned in despatches, but surely an Aston Vantage V600 Le Mans is the one? The best part of two tons of leather armchair nailed to 2 superchargers.

I can only assume going by many of the suggestions on here, that the term GT means something completely different to back in the old days when it meant "Grand Tourer".

Nothing controversial at all. This is exactly what I had on my mind. In the case of the Tipo engined '12, most definelty.
