I feel like the Vauxhall ambassador on here but, don't rule out a Vauxhall. Lots of room if comparing to the equiv in other brands and more reliable than they are made out to be by some badge snobs. Also if they do go wrong they are literally half the price to fix compared to other makes too.
Vectra/Insignia VXR very nice looking and plenty of mods out there for them to improve them.

That might not sound like sexy advice but I have to say that for the OP's situation it makes sound sense.

I agree it's surprising how old STs are still commanding such strong prices for whats a very outdated looking car.

OP have you looked at the Mazda 3 or 6 MPS? In budget but the road tax on the pre 09 facelift cars is probably enough to put you off. I also know your search criteria on Autotrader very well (!) so I presume an Alfa Romeo Gulietta is no good?

If it was me I'd go for a Golf edition 30. I love these think they look great, lovely build quality. I'm a vw Audi fan through and through though. Have you considered an estate like an e90 325/330? Great sound but normally high miles.

At this price they're all good cars & no more reliable than each other, there would have been a 2k difference in favour of the Ford when new, which grew to 4k for the Edition 30.

Now they're all pretty much the same money which means the VW's have depreciated a little bit harder than the Focus ST's who'd have thought it.

Ive got one as a daily and it's utterly superb - dsg 5 door. Loads of room for the children and good on fuel. Parts are readily available cheaply from ECP if you are on a budget. They hold their value well and out of the all the VAG 'editions' its the only one with any significant effort ie K04 turbo and block from S3.

Infact last december I bought a new Golf R thinking it would be a great upgrade from the ed30 - sold the R after a few months; although far better built and 4wd it just felt numb in comparison to the ed30 (its got an APR upgrade) I'd say the mk5 GTI is one of the best VAG offerings for years.

Hello all,

Thankyou SO much for so many helpful replies

At the moment i'm swaying towards the GTI, but thats mainly because i have someone that i can trust who is willing to sell me one at a discounted price, but since its a car i intend to keep for a relatively long im not only thinking about the price.

At the moment, it costs me about £35-40 to fill up my tank, a 1.4 ford fiesta, could anyone on here shed some light into roughly how much a full tank costs to fill up these cars? especially the ST as ive heard it drinks petrol, Tried to find this online but i couldn't, could only find rough estimates of stuff like services, mots and such

And also, simply put, are BMW's ridiculously expensive to 'run', i hadnt even thought about them because i could only find the 1series, but i messed about with the search filters and realised there was a wholeee section of them that i had missed out on, again, i assumed that a half decent bmw would be far out of my price range but apparently they arent

I can't comment on "newer" BMW costs, but if you do decide that's the avenue for you, find a good indy. The most I paid for a major service was on a V8 E32, and I paid £189 for a "major" service. Thing is, not much goes wrong, but if it does, It could be expensive.
Focus ST, approx £60 to fill. it takes 55 litres. 30mpg, sounds optimistic to me, but at that, you'd get approx 360 mls on a full tank.
Happy hunting smile

Just found this which may be of interest...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Or you could ignore fuel consumption and mileage rules which gives you the below options...

Last of the truly great BMW's probably not going to drop much in value if looked after and also if looked after not overly expensive to run evil

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

Or newer and potentially less maintenance heavy...

Prime issue with these is chain and tensioners which are hugely expensive to replace however since it will come in at around 2k under top end of budget you could look at putting the £2k towards replacement

The cost of filling a tank only indicates how big the tank is! For example it´s likely a Golf has a larger tank than a Fiesta. Just because more goes in it doesn´t necessarily mean they will both use the tank-full in the same period or distance.

Search for miles-per-gallon, mpg, litres per 100km or l/100km. The figures are easy to compare.

The tank may be bigger but you may not have to fill it so often. Or just put less in if you haven´t got much cash on you.

This all seems relatively obvious. Seems. rolleyes
