200k daily driver
Discussion
I ran a '96 Jaguar 4.0 Sovereign, on LPG. Bought at 120k, I intended to run it to 200k.....I loved that car !, sold it .... Still running, no major issues, at 325k miles. I had it for 8 years. Current daily, owned 6 years.....Jaguar XJ8 (X350), on LPG....bought at 40k, now on 140k. Not worth much now, so I'll keep it for the foreseeable. We also have an old Jeep Cherokee on LPG, 175k....still runs a treat.
I have actually bought a car with over 200k. It was an Octavia 1.9 tdi estate, 52 plate with 217k. Unfortunately it broke due to head gasket issues around 230k but on reflection I probably could have prevented them. This is absolutely nothing compared to my mum's Nissan Patrol though. Bought at over 300k km and then went on to do over 400k km while still being off-roaded like a beast up the dunes of Abu Dhabi. It even got used as a car for running about journalists filming the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and she could do dunes and bowls that many of the rally cars couldn't manage. Replaced with an even more classic 80's shape patrol.
Sadly the rear radius arm bearings failed on my ZX at 196,000 miles so I never made it in to the 200k club. But I did 100k miles in a bit over 3 years in that car and as I was claiming mileage I think it worked out at something like 8 or 9 pence profit per mile I drove, helped by running on Veg oil at about 50p/litre for a while, great economy but I kept finding myself fancying a plate of chips
There are lots of people in America who have taken the LS400 to lots more than 200K
Here is one example you can read about : 900K mile bought by motoring journo and been on many a road trip since then.

I did about 100,000 miles in this taking it from 100k to 200k.
This was a photo as it was at about 200k. I decided when it got to 200k I would get something a bit newer and
start again
Just looked on the MOT website and it looked like it never made it to another MOT.
I reckon it was destined for a life of drifting as the Z3 rack, 3.07 LSD and few other tweaks
meant the new buyer was keen to try it out in that discipline. For £800 it wasn't a bad buy as it had no faults when I
moved it on. Lighter than an E46 CSL with heated leather, folding seats, climate control, sunroof
Hopefully its younger replacement will carry on....just over 100k on that and soldiering on faultlessly

Nearly - 196k on my Jag. Should roll over to 200k at some point this autumn.
The clock doesn't work. Stupid heap of junk.
YYeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Ticked over to 200k as I pulled into the work car park. Oh happy day - the sun burst through the cloud and Parry's Jerusalem filled the air. The clock doesn't work. Stupid heap of junk.
Feel ridiculously happy for something that doesn't at all matter.
Next milestones are:
210897: When I have driven 100k miles in the car.
221794: When I've driven the majority of miles in it
238855: Average distance to moon.
I took a £400 Mondeo I bought from 180k to 220k over 3 years as my daily driver. Only ever needed brakes, tyres and a coolant sensor in that time. Best bargain I ever had (even if it did try to kill me once)
Was actually a bit sad to see it go, despite it being so utterly boring, it really rather did me well and I haven't managed to recapture the simplicity with now having to have a car-allowance friendly daily car.

In 2003 my dad bought a brand new E53 X5 with the 3.0 petrol engine for my mum as a birthday present. When he started doing even more miles he decided to use that instead of his E46 M3. Even though the E46 is long gone, The E53 remained and ticked over 200k last month. The only thing that doesn't work is the tyre pressure sensors. Original Gearbox, too!
I'm interested in what jobs you guys are doing which mean you are willing to give up your free time in order to get to and from work?
I'm guessing you must either love your job, do something very specialised which means roles are few and far between, or get paid a st load of money. Probably a bit of all of the above?

Not sure what you mean by giving up free time - isn't that just called commuting? I'm guessing you must either love your job, do something very specialised which means roles are few and far between, or get paid a st load of money. Probably a bit of all of the above?
Unless you mean lots of repairs etc - but my car hasn't needed that. If it did I'd bin it.

I believe he was referring to long commutes. Many here reporting 120 mile round trip daily commutes. That's roughly what... 2 hours per day driving, 10 hours a week driving to and from work, 520 hours per year, 21 and a half full 24 hour days per year driving to and from work, time that could be spent in bed or with family if you had a more local job.Unless you mean lots of repairs etc - but my car hasn't needed that. If it did I'd bin it.

Pfft, it's cheating when it's on an LS
Agreed! Built like a Japanese bank vault. http://jalopnik.com/tag/million-mile-lexus
Irrelevant fact - the engine is approved by the FAA for aviation use. Probably a clue to tough it is.
