Twice in recent weeks I've had cars skidding to a stop towards me on single track roads. On both occasions, it's been soft roaders barrelling round a bend, seeing the lead car coming the other way and slamming the brakes to a stop when they realise they're about to either go head on or scrape down the side of the other car. Always ask 'what if?' when you approach the unknown, never drive into the void.

On the motorbike, it's drivers who pull out without looking or steam towards a junction, slam the brakes on and then look, giving the impression they're just going to come straight out.
These are 2 points I teach & perhaps over emphasise with my students.

Never drive at a speed that you can't see ahead to stop in time.

Always approach a give way at a sensible speed & the more closed the junction the slower they should arrive at the junction, perhaps stop early before the line & peep & creep forwards scanning carefully for anyone in the main road.

That, to me, is the single mostly important rule in driving/riding, IMO.

Lorries tailgating in the 50mph road works limits on the M1.
That's because they will be doing GPS verified 50, not speedo 50 like you.....

My main concern when driving is people who can't seem to navigate roundabouts properly. Since when do you use the left lane on a D/C to turn right???
Since they tag your inside rear as your pull off onto a DC then disappear into an industrial estate and the local plod leave you to trace them. Then refuse involvement even though the person driving was not insured leaving you to have the back end of your car replaced.

Yep, lets use lane one for exit 4!! when its NSL DC in and NSL DC out.

Being at the back of a queue or tailback on a busy road or Motorway.

Luckily this makes me keep a very close eye on my mirror which certainly saved my bacon a couple of years ago on the M62.
This for me too, there is one episode of Road Wars that never quite left me involving a lorry and a pug at the back of a motorway queue frown
I remember that episode. My cousin was killed by a drunk Lorry driver about 25 years ago in fog on the m6.. 18 December we got the news. The Lorry driver had been to an Xmas party the night before. Over the limit. Traffic became stationary and he drove into the back of my cousin. She died instantly and had to have a closed coffin. Years later I remember talking to my dad about it I was only around 10 years old at the time, apparently the car was as flat as a pancake , top of her head was severed by the steering wheel. So this makes me nervous.

The other thing is lorrys on roundabouts with foreign plates. The number that have no idea how they work or no lane discipline at all is frightening. I live near Newark (Notts) and the number of accidents on the island where the a46 meets the a1 is staggering due to poor lane discipline. It reminds me of driving in the Middle East sometimes, I swear they must give out driving licences in a cracker these days.

Fair enough. To be fair, in 50 zones through roadworks, I don't much worry about lorrys tailgating. Generally, they have jobs to do and places to get within alotted times ( usually chosen for them by "transport managers" ) and the very last thing they want is a hold-up, so chances of a bump are probably slim to zero.....caravanners though, they might worry me. Generally I'm too busy watching what's ahead to be concerned with "tailgaters".

It seems that more and more drivers have next to zero situational awareness.

In general the standard of driving these days is shockingly bad.

huge roundabouts, well intentioned to keep traffic flowing but often with white lines all over the place and much lane changing. Possible to get accustomed to on a daily basis, but a nightmare for occasional and hence out of town drivers
