and would get spanked by a proper 2 seater.
Spanked in what respect?Anything under or around 8mins on the Nurburgring is very fast indeed but this is not a production vehicle, its a modified track car.

I'm pretty sure the production car won't be too much slower. What proper 2 seater for £35k can you get that will lap as quickly, and be as much fun on track?
370z, Caterham, Lotus Elise S.Then theres the proper usable 4 and 5 seaters and all the other usable hot hatches with various layouts etc etc.

370z: Nowhere near the focus of R26.R etc. Don't they tend to overheat with hard track use? Off the pace of the fastest hatches
Caterham: Woudn't fancy driving one of these down to a European track weekend
As for all the other 4/5 seater - how many of them would put up with sustained track use?

Elise S: For some reason Elises tend to be slow round track for their given power/weight - these would be way off the pace of the top hatches if both were driven by a good driver, let along average

Your top point, yes much less power but it would be faster on a tighter circuit. We won't know either way as this Golf is not the production car.370z: Nowhere near the focus of R26.R etc. Don't they tend to overheat with hard track use? Off the pace of the fastest hatches

370z: the closest related 'ring time is for a 350z with 286bhp. It came in at 8:26 in 2002 (14 years ago). A 370z has 344bhp. Certainly not off the pace of the fast hatchbacks. I have not heard of them overheating on track. Source? Do you know the production Golf won't have any issues? Nope because this is not a production car being recorded.
Caterham: Your point is pretty much irrelevant. Depends on conditions. Some oeople might prefer it. Subjective. Also how do you know the production Golf is not very stiff and uncomfortable as this is not the production car being tested.
Your last point...well guess what.....we don't know how this car will hold up on track because...........this is not the production car being tested/recorded.
Do you get the common theme occurring here?

I am sure with the same type of fettling any car could be set up to do a time round the Nurburgring far better than the standard model, the 370Z would be faster than the 350Z as it has another 50 bhp or more, remove some weight, stiffen it up, put some super sporty tyres on and there wouldnt be a lot in it either way.

Put a Megane on 'super' tyres and up the boost and the result will be similar. Put a Focus on 'super' tyres.....370z: Nowhere near the focus of R26.R etc. Don't they tend to overheat with hard track use? Off the pace of the fastest hatches

You might not be able to drive to the ring yourself in a Caterham but it's not that difficult. But you're missing the point. And, i'm sure the Golf would start waving the white flag after a few sessions, the Caterham wouldn't, it's not carrying all that fat.
In summary. Another Golf that people are going to buy and talk about in the pub. For everyone else slightly tweaking one of the current crop would give you the same, cheaper.

I reckon if you bought the car, knew the circuit like a pro and drove it balls out you get that lap time.
I know they've been out of production for a good few years, but I wonder how a TVR Sagaris with the 4.0 engine, 380 bhp (unless you could get the 420bhp Super Sport engine) and weighing just over a metric tonne would fair, after all it is a 2 seater..
Mind you, after owning one if ant vouch for whether the brakes etc would last a scorching lap of the 'Ring.....
