So would that make the Trophy R Megane the actual production car record holder as that came with the roll cage?

Interesting lateral G-loads the video shows... and by interesting I mean "well out of the expected range".

Not really. Most of the corners there have very favourable camber. I've consistently seen 1.5G cornering recorded on the PBox in my Elise on normal road tyres around there.

Never thought I'd see the day a Golf GTI was being compared with a TVR and a Porsche let alone 'kit cars'.

It is what it is, a car released to try and improve the image of the drab Golf range. The new Civic and Focus look twice the car that even this 's' car looks.
I'm sure it will have it's place in the grey annals of history, can't see it ever being revered as one of the greats.

Would I have one? £40k - no chance, £30k still no. Why? It's a Golf and will always be a Golf and to me the Golf GTI died with the MK2 GTI big bumper edition. There is also a lot of metal out there for £40k that looks so much better and you wouldn't have to explain why you paid that price to have a Golf with 2 seats.

There's at least 2 people from this forum that have built their own golf platform cars and can put in similar times driving themselves. Does make a mockery of the so called professionals.

What kind of coolant temperatures are they getting driving through Death Valley?

They are so called professionals because they get paid to develop cars. It's, like, their profession.

You make no relevant point apart from an argument.

Clubsport S is what the Clubsport should have always been. But fairplay VW for stacking up the Clubsport orders and then coming out with the S right afterwards laugh
+1 to that it looks like VW are learning a thing or two from Porsche's marketing department wink
Just wait until the "S" orders are all received. Then release an RS version, with no kit and a £20k premium. Await the furious cries of "Shut up and take my money" hehe

Huh?

My point is that it is easier to build a focused/quick car when you don't need to consider the 1,000,001 requirements that a manufacturer needs to.

What's your point?

But their cars aren't brand new, meeting emissions regulations (leave the jokes out), doing 40mpg with a 3 year warranty.
It's not hard to build a Golf to do 7:50 but it is hard to make one good enough to sell as a factory car.

A very good point. As daft as a two seater hatchback is, they are more practical than an MX5. If you are into biking, or buying or moving bulky things, then a sportscar is only so much use.

With the resources available and especially with professional drivers behind the wheel I'm surprised they aren't much further ahead with a limited production 2 seater caged golf. Emissions aside, I don't believe a true 40mpg is possible.

Right so we are saying a 2 seater hatchback is really great if you want to use your 2 seater toy to go biking or shopping at Ikea, want to take your missus but leave the kids at home plus have £40k in change rattling around. That use case must apply to about 400 people in the whole world. Luckily they are only making 400 wink

I don't really think that doing that would be in keeping with the "brand image" but hey.

I did say it was daft! I wouldn't buy one at half price with a BJ thrown in. But some people will buy anything "limited". VAG, like Pork, know this. Hence the piss take on the price. They just want some marketing hype and they got it.

Er, the Honda also had a roll cage fitted for their record runs, as did the Seat. I. Fact I would expect all these cars will be running cages from now on due to the speeds they're travelling at and the manufacturers responsibility for the health and safety of those attempting the record.
yep, if anything the actual 'production car' will be slightly more capable (for the price of safety) due to not having a 25+kg roll cage!

also it's funny how attitudes change here, when the mk1 R26R broke the record most were in full praise of the car and its now a cult car.

I don't understand how petrolheads can't see the appeal of this anymore.

Hmmm....Elise perhaps, but a 1300-1400kg hatch? As a comparison, our Aston GT4 car on brand new Avon slicks was about 1.3G sustained and that weighed about 1300-1400kg. Pilot Sport Cup2s aren't a huge way off, but 1.2G is VERY punchy for a road tyre....

It's not that uncommon for 'Special' tyres to be used in these record attempts. I'm not 100% calling foul play, but......
