What about the nut behind the wheel in all this (ref yesterday's item about Zero to Hero).

I'm waiting for the news story where it turns out the lap record was set using "incorrectly" calibrated timing equipment.

To be fair what is 1.5 seconds or even 5 or 10 seconds on a 7min 49 lap.

It's barely noticeable that's what!

I mean kudos vw and all that. Makes the brand seem a little less boring but when car manufacturers churn out cars to go faster around a circuit that people might be lucky to visit just once in their lives it's all gone a bit far

If you're interested we've added a couple of vids to the story; first is a VW promo with a little taste of the behind the scenes visit we had (Matt was literally being herded out of the way so as not to get in the shot!) and the full onboard lap too.

And if you're not interested ... you don't have to watch them!

Cheers!

Dan

I like it, but I'd still rather have the Civic silly

VW, I applaud you for the first time I think. It seem's like you have been skimming the articles regarding the GTi, R & Clubsport and came up with something relatively light weight by todays standards, more focused and manual only which is what everyone seemed to want. Although there will be still 10+ pages of heated discussion regarding the price, It's the usual remove more, charge more scenario which we have been seeing for a coupe of decades I suppose so nothing new there.

I thought they'd banned timed runs around the 'ring a while ago?

Shame, it would be nice if manufacturers stopped focussing on this rubbish.

At least pistonheaders are predictable.

VW release the Clubsport and it gets slated on these pages as a missed opportunity to be something a bit special. VW then create something a bit more extreme with the CSS and it then gets slated again.

If that is true I find it amazing the lengths carnuts go to.
Oooo a high power flat 4/6 with lower C of G and sleek low bodywork.
All seems a bit pointless if it leads to a @462s vs @470s time. @2% faster.
yes
If this Clubsport S had an additional 100 bhp, which looking at the remap results is not completely unthinkable for a limited special edition car, it would be considerably quicker than the Cayman GT4 around the track.
A current VW Golf quicker than a current Weissach developed GT car... and people still wonder why NA engines are dying. wobble

disclaimer: yes I know the GT4 is more fun to drive, sounds better, could have more power and is not comparable to the GTI, bla bla.

even if it was the supermini GT3 RS everyone seems to proclaim it to be, it's a Ford.

which makes me wonder why they didn't just get a Polo, Clio or 208 which are far better road cars.
Its a Ford? Like VW is anything better? Oh dear.

From every review I have read the ST is the better road car so I'm not sure why you think the others "are FAR better". Far better in what respect?

That has to be the worst onboard video ever. Great view of the sky and the trees, but not much of the track. Almost unwatchable.

Seriously .... all he has posted on this forum for the past few weeks has been biased towards the polo GTI. The only positive it has over the Fiesta ST for me is the ride comfort ... by quite a margin.

How many people that have bought a civic/megane/golf/leon plan on using that car for racing and not using it as their daily driver to tesco?

Fair play VW on this regardless how worthwhile as an exercise this is, i'd argue the same about the renault ones they do and people don't batter an eyelid but VW no you are not allowed to do this lol

Be interesting to see if when the Leon Cupra r comes out they go for it again, the fact the estate is quicker than the hatch shows it had more potential than the original time which then became an available production car

I've completed quite a few laps of the n.ring. 1.5 seconds round the entire ring isn't "that much". So many variables on such a long track.

1.5 seconds round knockhill is a MUCH larger margin and aligns with the comment to do with racing.
