Have to agree, if I was forced to buy a Golf, it would be the non s Clubsport or the R rather than this irrelevance.
Removing the rear seats on a 4 seater car to save weight is cheating as far as I am concerned.
See the M3 CSL as a brilliant example of how to loose over 100kgs without having to cheat.

The banner of the rearward facing camera filming the driver almost completely obscures the track on anything approaching an uphill section (quite a lot on the ring, in fact most of it is uphill) and as for the odd countdown music all the way through? WTF?

It probably had 'funny' tires on like so many Audis have had in track tests, and will definitely have camber and other alignment way off factory settings to optimise track times like VW Group has been caught doing countless times by Sport Auto when they did an alignment check.
And even if it might be that fast with semi-slick tires on what's the point? Golfs are boring A-to-B cars. Who wants a 2-seat version of that?

I always think its labouring a point making a car go as fast as possible round the Nurburgring by taking useful stuff like seats out, putting sticky tyres on, giving it more power and crowing about it, its a bloody Golf, except it isnt as it has been made useless, imagine explaining a 40 grand Golf with the seats removed to your missus, or any of the super focused editions sans back seats, why not fold them down like everybody else 
I can understand track focused 911's as their rear seats are crap anyway, I am sure someone will buy it and love it but if you are going to have a track car, build one, if you are going to have two seats in a road car, make it a proper 2 seater, imagine explaining that to anyone who may need a lift, sorry I cant give you a lift, my Golf doesnt have rear seats as it saves 19 kilos (or whatever a rear bench weighs) so it can go extra fast round a German racetrack so you will have to get the bus, or walk.
They will obviously sell every one they make and they will go up in value like 911s with 1980s teenagers bedroom colour schemes, climbing frame inside, a bit of cloth to open the door and all the goodies removed, they used to call this a Base, L, Popular Plus or poverty spec, the minute the words Club and Sport are applied to a car it immediately becomes worth a Pajillion quid and is spoken of in hushed terms, I used to take a Jacobs "Club" to school in my bag that said "Sport" on it on the side, wish I had kept it.
Go and take the back seats out of any normal car and tell your friends and family it is so you can go a smidge faster, grounds for getting sectioned, massive German car company does it to save the cost of a rear seat, then charges you more for it, it is the second coming.

I find it quite awesome and demanding but I am a fairly poor track driver. Quite happy if that makes me a 8-year old level moron, not that I understand what that is.J4CKO said:

people like to have something a little different and special whilst staying in the brand that they like imo that's what helps sell these cars

I dont think its boring, just a bit strange, when I think of a fast, compromised two seat pain in the arse I think of something Caterham shaped, not a Golf GTI with powered front wheels and rear ones it drags about just to keep the back off the floor.I do expect it will be great fun, but 40 grands worth ?
Mk1 or 2 with a tuned TT engine, Quaife diff, rear seats
