We buy Merc vans not for the posh badge, but because they're capable of absolutely obscene milages (think 500k AVERAGE service life). A mercedes commercial isn't like you'd imagine, they're a bit like getting into a land rover defender, hard plastic visable screw heads (they're not immediately noticeable but they are there!) etc. Very utilitarian, but that whif of meticulous ergonomic design where you notice that things that you never even thought of have been designed to make your life more comfortable easier.

But anyway, on the pick up. All they really have to do is be revolutionary in this vehicle catagory and fit it with coil springs and disk brakes all round (like the Land Rover Defender had, remember that?), a little bit of sound deadening and offer their full range of light commercial engine options (130hp, 160hp 4 pots, and a 180hp 6 pot) and thats them onto having the best vehicle in it's class by a long way!.

Its aimed at the US. Pickups arena huge deal and not just on ranches. Go South or West and everybody drives one. No practical reason. Must say I have been tempted by a Ford Raptor for no possible reason that I can explain. A Mercedes pickup will do well.

Only caveat it that Lincoln and Cadillac tried sort of semi pickups in last few years and failed.

And here was me thinking that people bought Mercedes vans for the rust holes.

And since this GLT pickup is based on a pickup that already has coil springs at the rear (and wasn't the first to do that anyway), I would say it's a reasonable chance it'll get coil springs at the rear and it's not revolutionary.

When the zafira reaches 3 years old in April and I no longer have prams to haul about I have been thinking of a pick up as alternative family car. Anyone tried a Ford ranger etc as a family car?

You have to wonder why they bother with the disguise.

It's just another boring ute. What's to hide?

Pick Ups, well appointed ones at least grew in popularity in the USA due to luxury car tax, this wasn't levied on pickups so manufacturers came up with luxury pickups and they sold like hot cakes. While they're not quite European quality they are nice places to be. The likes of Cadillac & Lincoln were just rebadged Fords & Chevrolets, their normal market were old people who didn't exactly want or need a pickup.

Nobody needs one but nobody really needs SUVs yet they sell well, same as the BMW GT range, I've yet to think of a reason for them.

Build them and people will buy them
