As an Admiral customer I'm treated to all kinds of wonderful emails, however today a nice chap named Tom sent me this email with the following info on car tax reforms next year:

"VED at the lower end of the band is free for petrol or diesel cars that emit up to 100g per km of CO2, after that you’ll pay £20 a year for cars emitting between 101 and 110g/km.

The most expensive category is for cars emitting over 255g/km and it will cost up to £540.75 for a year’s tax. Brand new cars in the highest emissions bracket will set you back £1,120 if bought in the first year of registration.

However, all this is set to change in 2017 when VED will be transformed into three bands – zero, standard and premium. Speaking in the 2015 Budget, Chancellor George Osborne said the standard charge of £140 would apply to 95% of all cars.

In March, a think tank called Policy Exchange said the VED rate for new diesel cars should increase by up to £800 to reflect the high levels of air pollution they cause.

They believe that encouraging motorists to switch from diesel towards lower emission alternatives such as petrol, hybrid, or electric cars would lead to a dramatic improvement in air pollution levels in the UK."

Does this mean subsidies on V8s? Who pays these people to think for Christ's sake... I'd like to drive a tank to their think tank.

PS. Sorry if posted already, couldn't see it posted recently.

Policy Exchange are a fking pain in the arse. Do they ever suggest anything helpful? They seem to just make it up as they go along. Having a government run by think tanks run by people with absolutely no clue about real life is ridiculous.

There was a thread linking to a YouTube video recently that explained it.

As I understand it...

when you buy a new car you get bummed for a few years on tax - especially if it's an expensive car. I believe you get bummed for doing this already, it will be a more vigorous bumming from 2017.

It's still free to tax if it's electric.

Everything else is 140quid a year to tax.

Those of us driving round in 2litre turbo petrol cars are going to pay less than this year.

Everyone who bought a diesel cos it was 30quid a year to tax is going to bh about having to pay more than this year.

Haha, as if they expect us to believe there are any cars that DON'T emit more than 255g/km.

They must think we were all born yesterday. silly

About time diesels were taxed off the streets. Filthy diesel fumes everywhere these days.

What about those of us who make a genuine saving driving a diesel car? (The difference between visiting my girlfriend and saving for a mortgage deposit or only choosing one of those things). Or is petrol going to magically become cheaper?

Get an electric car, public transport or pay for petrol like everyone else.

Its that or continue to gas the countryside for the next 50 years.

Diesel fumes really are on another level to a few years ago and people such as yourself are not going to stop driving for the sake of the environment or anyones health. Therefore taxation to put them in line with petrol may be the only way to stop the surge of diesel purchasers.

Well I have to say I'm torn.

On one hand, the government are shafting the motorist (including me) because they've released they're not creaming it in from 4x4 drivers as much as they thought they would, because everyone's gone and bought frugal cars.

On the other hand, all those people who smugly declare their asthmatic Tupperware boxes have free road tax will have to shut up!

Too right. They should be kept for the countryside.

Have you been breathing diesel fumes? wink

EDIT: Serious comment: I was wondering about a car that drinks from the black pump but this would certainly put me off. I imagine used values will dip if the rumours are thought to be true, even long before 2017. Is it more than just think tank guff for now though?

Thousands of people are removing the DPF, making a bad situation even worse. If people cannot be trusted then diesels should be banned or at least taxed off the road.

It's about time that diesels were taxed fairly; a massive increase is about due.

The changes only apply to cars registered from April 2017 onwards though. Cars already on the road prior to this date will continue to be taxed based on the old system.

Do people like you really believe this. Or is it just for the sake of posting on the Internet?

Stick to the mortgage deposit and put the property in your name only said the cynic!

Then you can enjoy petrol-power without being told to slow down - you only live once!
