What Weekend Car - 20k Budget

That was my theory too, the repayments are less than what I'd put away to save for one but the rising prices mean I might end up actually paying more than the interest on a loan if I waited and saved.
It's admittedly easier for me though as I don't have a wife to consult/frown about it!

Ah, well, she is in quite a good mood at the moment as she's just picked a new kitchen so, have probably got some brownie points banked. I mentioned the TVR to her just now, and I think she realised I wasn't joking... we'll see how this goes - wish me luck!!
Mention you are looking at something like a Nissan GTR etc, then when she complains/puts up resistance, you simply back down and say you completely understand where she's coming from and therefore you will instead make do with a 'cheap' old TVR for a fraction of the outlay...Bullet-proof

Just made her a cup of tea - surely she cannot possibly say no now. This is looking pretty much spot on for me:Bullet-proof

That looks a very tidy example you linked too. Bit above the budget I am looking at, I love the colour combo.

I'm starting looking for one next month hopefully (albeit not a 500)!
Congratulations Paul,
No doubt see you in the TVR forums, some amazing talented owners offering their expertise when or if needed.
Your first biggest problem solver if not fitted already is a battery trickle charger, the other is to use the car. Many problems can raise their ugly head by simply not driving the car.
Pearl Blue one?
Best regards Jas

£20k will get you a nearly new GT86........you don't need massive power to have fun.
Having a bit of power does help though, I am really trying to love the GT86 because I get it's philosophy but I worry it would just leave me seriously flat ultimately. It's uninspiring engine and serious lack of torque concern me big time, my old 200sx had similar bhp and weighed pretty much the same yet in standard guise it was very ordinary in terms of its performance...it was easily/cheaply modded though to rectify its short comings.

Azure blue. Yes, my dad uses an optimate with his MG RV8, so will be getting one before I pick it up.
Found it....
Lovely and a very liked color at a very good price, have been at many events and across the masses that color gets the thumbs up.
From your research you must already know you can invest quite a bit of money into it and still be well under what a very good 500 goes for.
I'm presuming it needs outrigger replacement soon(They all will at some stage),mines a May 97 400 and as we speak is in having exactly this done. Chassis tidy up,new outriggers and renew a lot of the almost 20yr old bushes/wishbones etc and also having the Lupo light conversion done.
Some exciting times ahead for you Paul

Just saw my thread been revived so thought id post an update. The supra is gone, sold within a week and got exactly what I wanted for it so now Im on the hunt for another car.
Im going out in a Cerbera in a few weeks, kindly offered by a PH'er on this thread so I cant wait for that.
The searching has already begun and Im kinda fixed on a TVR, I may go out and test drive an Exige at some point but the 4 cylinder, lack of character engine puts me off, Im only saying this due to having the same 2zz engine in my daily Celica. Im guessing in the Lotus its a different animal.
Budget could be stretched for the right car but around 20k is what im aiming for, with enough held back for maintenance.
I was looking the other day and Tuscans are within budget but low end of the price range so will have to research those, how does the Speed 6 compare to the ajp8?
A Chimaera 4.5 is well within budget too for a good example or maybe stretch to a 500. Lots of options at the moment but my heart is set on a Cerb.
Who knows what I will get, decisions!

Yup, for £20k you could get a Honda S1. For a weekend car that would be perfect.
GT86 is a nice car, lack of power isn't so much the issue, it's just a horrible engine. Slow revving, boring delivery., it feels like it belongs in an MPV.
The engine in my GT86 Sounds ok to me, I know it lacks a bit of mid range torque....keep the revs up and works fine. IMO GT86 is a nice car, lack of power isn't so much the issue, it's just a horrible engine. Slow revving, boring delivery., it feels like it belongs in an MPV.

I can see the criticism of this car.It comes alive only at 5k revs and needs gearbox use. These are not characteristics that appeal to many buyers. Shame because in terms of handling and fun it humbles most other cars.
