Is it safe to assume that if you come across such a right lane hogger it is permissible to just follow behind in the same lane?

If you follow a right lane hogger for a little while then soon enough the entertainment will begin as other frustrated but faster right lane hoggers arrive and inevitably they are not content to follow and after a period of aggressive tailgating they often to want to go for the undertake but usually at the most aggressive and most dangerous moment. If they undertake past me then I'm more than happy to let them slot in so that I can watch the next instalment. Only my superior driving skills prevent carnage on the roads.

Don't tell me let me guess its a white 1.6 tdi audi that undertakes ??? or maybe a black 316 BMW!!!

Whereas this is in complete opposition to my own recent experience here in sunny Sussex, where the worst outside lane hoggers tend to be women in small 1.0-ish hatchbacks such as Ka, Picantos and Ups.

They happily sit in L2 of a dual carriageway and won't move over to the clear inside lane and then won't go above 60.

But then, I only have evidence of this from my confirmation bias that because I've seen it a couple of times, I now specifically note in my head another time I see it and therefore am able to go 'it's always women in 1.0ish small hatchbacks...'

And yet, and yet... as a Range Rover driver I seem to spend most of my motorway driving stuck behind people in little cars sitting in the outside lane who apparently can't see even a ruddy big Range Rover coming up behind them. smile

Not the M25. The M3 today.

It is not fine to sit in lane three whilst not overtaking. Read your Highway Code.
Were there truly no cars in the other lanes? Obviously yes that is a bit selfish if true. But come on, you are the one preaching the Highwaycode, where you speeding or sticking to 70mph winkwink

Perhaps the OP was behind you and couldn't see the little car hidden from view by your RR?

I don't think it's surprising that people sat in an armchair with no sense of speed pick up bad habits.

OP - I agree. In my experience most RR drivers are inconsiderate, self important drivers. I despise the vehicles purely because of my experience in encountering them on the road and seeing the way they behave.

Cocks' the lot of 'em soapbox

"People in little cars", typical RR driver attitude, I agree with OP 100%, always driven by some chavvy wannabe drug dealing 40 something balding fat git with gold chains, often with a crusty sun bed tanned bleached blonde gob ste tart sat next to them.

OP. If lanes 1 and 2 were indeed clear - what were YOU doing in lane 3?

Pot calling kettle... wink

Most Range Rovers will be hogging the hard shoulder looking for the best place to break down.

Hoping to overtake I should think. I appreciate going past on the inside looked like the only option in the circumstances.

I enjoy seeing Range Rovers on our roads.

British built, British jobs and someone doing well enough to buy and run one.

The more the merrier IMO.

I don't think I have ever seen a Range Rover in the left hand lane of a motorway
