RE: Citroen SM: PH Carpool

Nicely written, rated accordingly, classic cars need YOU .
On the car's looks I must be the exception that proves the rule.
DS oh yes. Up there as one of the all time best looking cars of all time, even lightweight E-types have to roll up their sleeves, gird loins and focus to win that battle. But the SM just doesn't do it for me - mental (in a good way), yes but good looking, no,

I had the pleasure of meeting Giorgio Cassanelli in Italy approximately 10 years ago. He spoke very little English.
A Maserati Merak and SM specialist, he repaired, serviced and traded these cars. When I visited his work shop he took me out in his personal SM and floored it. Quite an experience.
At the workshop he had a couple of Meraks, one of which he had taken the engine out and put it in a test rig. Started it up with no exhausts. Incredible sound.
A lovely gentleman.

Thanks for the kind comments. Winter work has now been completed and she's out enjoying the sun. Surprisingly, I still am in possession of my sanity and she's not let me down (yet). Next big trip is Le Mans Classic with some friends, most of them in classic Alfas...........Wonder how many of us will get there?
You did t also used to have a little Lotus XI as well did you?SM's Maseratiemotor has mixture problems and heating issues because of it, is not very reliable and runs bad and uneconomical. Some outfit in The Netherlands equip the SM engine with a Megasquirt digital injection system, substantially improving power, mpg and resolving heating issues. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqQEhDS-bM4 You can spend al that you want on the engine and its webers but this is the most cost effective solution. Succes

One of my madder daydreams is to buy a DS, rip out the 4 cyl motor & gearbox, and fit an electric drivetrain. On the car's looks I must be the exception that proves the rule.

Keep the hydraulics, but run off an electric pump.
Magic carpet ride, futuristic shape, and Tesla S performance

Dear oh DearWhy on earth would change a classic car running on triple Webers and replace them with soulless fuel injection. Additionally the problems with SM engines are well known and the one you mention ( if it exists! ) is an irrelevance in the greater scheme of things. i.e.
1] breakage of sodium filled valves
2] rear timing chain failures
3] oil pump failures
4] under bonnet fires due to perished oil lines
5] Hydraulic leaks
6] European spec A/C pumps
The list goes on...
Fortunately mods to rectify these issues are easily available (if somewhat costly!) and decent cars would have had these issues sorted
Admittedly carb set up can be tricky, but TRIPLE WEBBERS!!!!!!

Maybe it's an age thing, but I'd be happier never to see another carb for as long as I live Why on earth would change a classic car running on triple Webers and replace them with soulless fuel injection. If you're happier with Webers and bad performance, OK. For years I had a classic car that was unreliable, it totally ruined my experience. Partly you're right, the problems with the SM are worse in the versions with the D-jetronic, emotionally that could be easier converted to Megasquirt. On the whole I agree that you should restore classics as original as possible, but young-timers with well-known flaws are a lot more attractive without problems
