a current BMW 5 series is a least 200 to 300 kg's heavier than the 159. Somehow no journo seems to be bothered with.
Probably because it is of no relevance whatsoever: the current 5 is vastly larger than a 159, which was only ever a 3-series competitor

The newer-gen A4 that came out when the 159 was available was also heavier.
The issue was not weight but performance. And even more so perceived performance.
The sales rep in an A4 could dream he was driving an RS4. The Alfa driver could not.

Lo and behold, next model Alfa launches they start with a balls-out RS4 rival. Not a coincidence. Wonder if the Germans will follow that approach.

Looks a bit like a 3 series with an Alfa nose grafted on it.
Sadly, that is what focus groups and market research will push a company to do.
Then again Alfa has a way of making up for that with their 2 doors.
