The tiny rear quarterlight on the Mercedes E class coupe. It just looks strange. The rear side window would look better as a one piece.

I have a feeling that's because it would otherwise foul on the rear wheel when lowered if it was one piece. Agree though, it looks stupid!

Must the lettering be that large?
Don't mind that but reminds me of how horrid the rear lights are. Come to think of it, I intensely dislike many JRL lights:
X-Type oval headlights vomit
Pre-facelift XK front and (VW Sharan) rear
Previous generation XF (pre-facelift) headlights
Current Range Rover rears

Also, rear lights with the upper edges standing proud of the bodywork (e.g. Current Civic and recent Ferraris)
Off-set Sat Nav in the Merc SL
Instrument cowls for the speedo and rev counter which look st in any direction other than head-on

Etc etc

Those weird little bulges on the top of the trailing edge of the rear wheel arch that so many new cars have.

I know it's to do with compliance issues and the need to ensure the tyre tread is fully under the wheel arch but it always looks like an afterthoug as if the marketing guys insisted on wider tires than the designer anticipated.

The nonsense at the bottom of the front bumper, the stupid trims on the sills and the way the mirrors stick up out of the doors like an afterthought.

In fact the CLS is a complete design mess actually!

I agree, a step backwards. Hate the circular head rests too. I really like the rest. Apart from the dash.

Every time I see the tail lights, I see two palms grabbing its rear end...

Peugeot 508 hatchback - the badge placement on the rear bumper is a bit off when viewed from directly behind, surely going on the lower right of the boot lid would have been the better option?

Here's some info for you: The 0 in the 508 badge is the boot release button...

I realise that these aren't exactly recent but never fails to amuse me. The redundant number plate recess on the Suzuki Wagon R.

Also I can't tell whether it has black wheels or no wheels at all.

Similarly to the Peugeot in the OP, the badge location on the rear of the Juke sets my teeth on edge too.

It's like when the design was finished and the 'badge' guy came along, he kind of floated it around various point on the car trying to figure out where to stick it, then got annoyed and just slapped it on the corner of the bumper.

Just the badge?? The whole bloody thing from the very edge of the front bumper to the tip of the exhaust pipe and everything in between, absolutely hideous! Neighbours mother has a yellow one, so tempted to swap the J for a P hurl

Worse still, on this and the CLA; frameless doors... with a quarterlight.

why.

So the window doesn't foul the wheelarch when lowered I would guess.

'Hidden' rear door-handles.

It started with the Alfa 156, they wanted to make their sporty saloon look like a sexy coupe - and it worked.

Works ok on the Honda Civic and Nissan Juke too.

But estate cars ?

What's the point ?

And 4x4s ? Can't remember the make/model, but I've seen a crew-cab 4x4 pick-up with the rear door-handles halfway up the c-pillar window frame.

I don't get it.

There's a lot of cars with the mirrors stuck on the doors like that, the 288GTO and MX5 are two that spring to mind.
The pre facelift CLS is a less fussy looking thing.

OMG!!! That is just ridiculous.

Mercedes built beautiful cars in the 50s and 60s and then the 70s, 80s and 90s their design, by and large from an aesthetic point of view, were square and dull at best and downright awful at worst. In the 2000s the got it together nicely design wise, but now they have fallen victim to the 'more is more' concept and are sticking design details all over their cars and not thinking designs through properly ... witness those quarter lights. You can't really pimp a modern Merc as Merc have done it already in the factory.

How about this silly wing as another Merc issue.

I love the way the image editor has highlighted it in red in case you miss it biggrin

Yes but it looks utterly incongruous on the CLS.

The first CLS was a pretty nice design.... mind you witness the transformation of the beautiful R230 SL to today's aberration.
