Great article thanks!

Hmmmm, so RS beats M2, now Type R beats RS.. Very confusing time for those withe a good budget to spend imo...
Is it really confusing? Surely you just go and test drive the ones you actually like the look of and pick the one you like the best?

Does it really matter what some article claims as this one is better than that one?

Its strange that the type R has come out on top between these two. If you look at residuals alone the Honda will be worth half what you pay in three years. Where the Ford will loose very little.
you've waited 76 months to post a remark about the residuals of two hatchbacks?? confused

Yes but I do know a thing or two about cars and just sold a Mk 2 rs having owned it for 6 years and only lost £3500 lets see what a typr R is worth in 6 years a blow on a ragmans trumpet.

If the M2 now beats the Type R, it'll be like rock paper scissors.

A veritable performance bargain in 2022 then, I urge one and all to give it a try if that is the case at the time.

I think there is plenty of evidence that RS models normally hold their money very well.

The cheapest Focus RS on autotrader is £8k for a 53 model.

Similar age Type R's seem to start at £2k.

Quite true and buy the one that your heart says rather than your head. I test drove a Type R last year good car well proven mechanicals good lines. £3000 deposit they wanted to order and £250 on credit card to book test drive returnable. Ordered a Focus its a better choice for me.

However take a look at the Integra Type R, they are now rising in price, likewise with the S2K. It really depends on how special the latest CTR is, It seems to be very special and not selling in the mass numbers the EP3 did. The DC2 was a rare car when it was introduced, I would argue that the same could apply to the latest CTR.

You think that a Polo with a simple remap could then cope with a stock CTR on track/back road? No suspension/setup tweaks at all, no?

You're dreaming.

I sense more thread de-railing is imminent.
Drive a standard one. Like myself I'm sure you'll be quite shocked as to how good they actually are. Reason I go on about it so much is because I genuinely wasn't expecting it to be so good (numb steering feel aside)
I bet I won't, honestly. Numb steering feel, yum.

Yeah, all done on bone dry tarmac, which isnt the case in the UK most of the time, 300 bhp and fwd in the wet is going to be interesting, the Ford seems better value, they are pretty much the same price yet Ford manage to include 4WD.
My thoughts exactly. I've not driven the Type R, but it looks like it has a smaller, more concentrated dynamic sweet-spot. When it's operating there it manages to be the more involving car, but the Ford has the ability to deliver more of its potential more of the time - come rain or shine. For full disclosure I've ordered an RS.

I love a hot hatch, and I'd be chuffed to have either on my drive. But in my experience 4x4/AWD are just boring to drive.

after back to back test drives Most of PH's would choose the Honda
RS is worth a test drive - no other 4x4 hot hatch uses the GKN Twinster rear clutch packs. It's where the weight is, but it's down low and is night and day compared with gen 1 Haldex cars

I am very close to buying a Type R.

My thoughts are the same as this article, the focus just seems a bit boring.

Also if you spec up a focus to anywhere near the same spec as a Type R GT you are looking at around 36K.

Got a couple of quotes for a brand new championship white Type R GT with 5 years warranty and servicing for 30K.

Another reason not to get an RS is the 13 month waiting list, Ford seem to be going the same way as Porsche with there GT models trying to create same strange hype by limiting numbers, making out they don't have the production capacity.

"So do you know when the clutch was last changed?"

"Which one?"

You should buy a Polo GTI and remap it instead pal.

Particularly if comparing to a Gen 1 Haldex that was fitted to an Audi in what, 1999?

The current Gen Haldex (4?) seems to do a decent job in the Golf R, if 4wd is your thing.

Funny you say that as superchips just released their map and it's 235bhp and 273ib/ft which isn't bad for £399 (standard figures are 189 and 236)

Great read. My type of cars all over! Funnily enough this generation I've always preferred the looks of the Civic (Focus too plain) but here I actually think the Focus pips it.

However I'd still go for the Civic if I could afford a car like this. It's just stupid and ott which is exactly what they're meant to be about imo smile

But there is just one thing... I hate 5 doors! Just can't do it afraid. So if I really had the money, it'd be the Golf R or Renaultsport Megane for me.

laugh

I'm starting to like you in an irritating, "I hope you never buy another car" kind of way.

You just don't give up.
