My girlfriend is insured on my cars and regularly drives to work in one of my classic Porsches during the summer.

I trust her completely and I'm happy the cars are getting a regular run out with her. She keeps her own car absolutely immaculate and hasn't so much as kerbed a wheel. So in some respects she is probably a safer and more careful driver than me!

As others have said, anyone refusing to let their girlfriend/partner/wife drive their car has some issues to think about.

I don't have any kids yet so that's not an issue, but when I was 17 onwards, my happily dad let me drive anything he had from Range Rovers to Porsches. I repaid him by not being an idiot and crashing them.

Yes. My wife is a very competent driver.

My daughters get to drive the pickup around our land on my lap, and I'm teaching the eldest (6 years old) to drive our ride-on mower as she can now reach the pedals. My younger daughter is still too small but is keen.

This shouldn't be an issue?!

I was on a business trip to OZ for 5+ weeks in 2010 and from time to time the Mrs drove my 123d to keep it being used - no issues apart from the average mpg on the OBC dropping like a stone! To be fair she is a good driver, especially when I am not present!

No issues with kids - we never had any! laugh

Strangely she didn't take me up on the offer of a drive in the Z4C even though she has always liked them - but I wouldn't have minded!

If I had bought a standard car - so it's replaceable, I would.

However my P&J have always been cars heavily modified by me so they aren't replaceable unless I can find the parts and the time again - hence I don't let them drive.

I once offered to let my wife use it and she asked if I would shout a lot if it got damaged, I said yes, she said in that case she'd rather not borrow it.

Which suits me.

My Mrs has drove all my past cars, no interest in the Elise though. Drove my vx220 a few times but she thought it was hardwork. I let my dad drive all my cars, he lets me and my brother drive his

My other halfs welcome to drive mine, she has zero interest in driving and anything with 4 wheels so rather be driven. But if needs be, it wouldnt bother me.

Although having a common car with zero mods makes any repairs cheap if anything happened. Not quite sure on my views if i had some of the cars you gents have.

Yes, without any reservation. I'm lucky, my better half is a very good driver and I have no issues with her driving any of our cars

My Mrs wont even go in my TVR as a passenger never mind drive it. I did let my dad drive it an airfield, I was a bit disappointed in him really, I expected him to give it a good thrashing and he barely tickled the throttle, he said he was scared of binning it.
I might let him have another go when we go to Blyton next as he has driven the track before so should be more confident.

This sadly, she has nowhere near as much mechanical sympathy or respect for my cars as I do so she gets to drive them rarely & normally when I'm sat next to her.

She is also very quick to deny everything which really pisses me off.

I wouldn't have a problem with her driving any P&J at all. She's a decent enough driver and has a good level of mechanical sympathy - my only gripe is that her car is like a skip on wheels, I have never seen more empty water bottles outside of a bin in my life.

My wife has no taste whatsoever in cars, she's never driven my Elise (too small, too fast) and won't drive the Mercedes (too big, auto box), her choice not mine.

Wouldn't bother me. Well, maybe not the kids if I had some as they'd probably be too inexperienced to drive something interesting but I've let my ex-wife drive my cars... when she took them as part of the settlement.

Step-son & daughter? Not a chance - though to be fair as far as they are concerned a car may as well be skip and treated as such, plus they have zero interest in cars and then to top it off it's "old". SWMBO? No problem, though she doesn't want to "too powerful & lhd" (though she's still insured just in case).

Son; no! not passed his test and managed to dent his mothers 500C twice in a week. (With yours truly saying Stop loudly, before, during and after). He has just been bought a car in his own name to practice in - Vauxhall Agila - slow and no street cred.

Wife; yes, has driven the Morgan and the Eunos when I had it and comfortable in both. Drove the Morgan down the Mulsanne straight, (not on a race day) with more than a little glee! She won't drive the Land Rover 110 as its size intimidates her- she demolished her father's fence with it one day. She is now casting covetous eyes on the Land Rover 90 for next winter.

Mother is insured on my car. She had a quick drive but found the clutch a bit heavy.

My partner drives my car. It's not my pride and joy (unlike my bikes!) but i've actually enjoyed ownership a lot more than I expected to... it's only a Mondeo laugh - albeit a pretty tidy one.

However... in Wales camping a couple of weeks ago, she drove back to the campsite as i'd had a few beers.

First she put the bloody keys on the bonnet as she sorted her jacket out or something... I could have flipped!

A car had parked behind us, and it's a fairly long car, so getting out of the space was a bit tricky. I had to get out and see her backward, and she was holding it at about 2000 rpm and slipping the clutch like mad. I've been slipping it as little as possible as it's never been changed and bites reasonably high.

I bit my lip, but it was tricky!

Of course, SWMBO drove my Tiger kit car regularly and on the day my boy passed his test I let him drive my XF to school. Why wouldn't you 'let' your family drive 'your' cars?
