I'd get one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-PEUGEOT-406-GLX-HDI...

My dad had one from new to 285,000 miles. Only major breakdown was caused by him not replacing the radiator after it developed a small leak, which turned into the black hole of calcutta, causing it to overheat spectacularly and grenade itself.

Replaced the engine, and used it for another year after that.
Another vote here for the 406.

I'm running round in an R plate 3.0 V6 GLX and it's surpassed all my expectations.

The air con wasn't working but after a regas it's blowing nice and cold.

The seats are superbly squashy and comfy in the way only a french velour chair can be and the ride comfort makes swift progress a lot easier not having to dodge potholes.

I even have the rare and optional rear wiper on a saloon.

It's been totally reliable as well.

Yesterday I went to see a primera, sadly it appeared to have a knackered gearbox which the seller was totally in denial about! I then had a go in an auto focus, I was very keen on the car but the gearbox was awful. I also called someone about a 406 which they insist is in lovely condition apart from the occasional misfire.

Today I am viewing a Honda Jazz, which if as described should be great! We'll see.

Thanks for the continued comments and ideas, it's made the search that bit easier.

Rover's/Mgs I think can be reasonable value for money, but IMO only if you're willing to get stuck in doing work yourself.
Recently got an extremely low mileage MGZR with the 160bhp engine, did the timing belt myself as soon as I got it and doesn't owe me much at all. Head gasket can be a lottery but again if you're happy taking stuff apart you can sort it out for not a lot and all workshop manuals can be found online now.
