Not sure if I'm posting in the right place, but here goes. Every year its the same, the AA write to me enclosing two gold cards for their automatic renewal, I then look on the internet to find they are offering the same thing £45 cheaper, which makes me furiousbiggrin Just given them a call and they can't match the internet price. Just checked the RAC and they want £200 as well.

So where is the cheapest place for breakdown cover or isn't there one? Maybe its me, but £200 seems a lot, especially considering we haven't broken down for more than 5 years.

Thanks

I just took out cover with the RAC after a cold call from them.

£47 Roadside recovery
£25 Hire car for onward travel
£65 for Euro cover for next week in Germany.

Total £137
No home-start or key cover included.

Annual Euro cover was £119.

Another good route is to use quidco, I was getting £80 back on some of the expensive packages last year which made the prices reasonable.

If your car is reliable and unlikely to break down then I suggest you look at someone like Qdos who can cover you on a per call out basis. I paid them £25 for my 2011 golf to have a 1 call out fully comprehensive package with all the bells and whistles.

If the worst happens and I need to use it then afterwards all I need to do is cough up another £25 to get another 1 call out policy.

I've had good service from LV/Britannia rescue, thought they're probably not the cheapest.

If you have one of those paid for current accounts with your bank, they frequently offer breakdown cover.

Our joint current account with Barclays (additions plus) includes full RAC UK and europe breakdown cover plus a host of other stuff like mobile phone insurance.

Cost is £10 a month so cheaper than breakdown cover alone.

Just remember to check the terms of the cover, some of the cheaper cover limits certain things like... recovery if you are more than 10 miles from your home address isn't covered for example

This. My Lloyds account is backed by the AA as well and much cheaper than them. Any vehicle I'm in is covered too so if I'm out with mates and we have a breakdown I can get it sorted.

Another vote for Autoaid - have been using them for about 5 years now and no complaints. They really stepped up when I got into un-fixable trouble 150 miles from home, at night, on the motorway, fully loaded with whole family, dog and loads of possessions..... Was an expensive recovery including a loan car and flatbed of dead vehicle back home. That hit my credit card pretty hard, but Autoaid paid up without quibble.
I even had to call for recovery 3 times in one year once (unprecedented for me) and still no quibbles.
I haven't used a traditional breakdown cover since discovering Autoaid and can't see that I would ever go back to one now.

Green Flag is £47pa for me. It doesn't over home start which I didn't need, but recovery from anywhere in the UK. They also operate a no claims system, so if you don't have a call out one year it reduces your premium the following year.
