I see your point. The Ferrari key is an especially lame effort given the pedigree and price of their cars. You wouldn't be in a hurry to plonk that miserable piece of plastic down onto bar top would you?

Houses are an interesting one though.

This would at least prick up some interest on the bar counter:

If you plonked that down on the bar, wouldn't people just think you're just some idiot who's brought a toy car to the pub?

Some child would steal it and it'd cost you about £5k for a replacement.
Who ever thinks that is a toy would be the bigger idiot I think! As for the child stealing it, I didn't really have a Wetherspoons pub in mind.

Personally I don't think my key is too bad.

Although I see what you're getting at with the likes of Ferrari. Aston though, aren't their latest keys a solid piece of glass?
One for locking, one for unlocking and one for a hot shower?

Because they need to be relatively cheap to replace as well as robust and long lasting.

I think the car shaped ones are a little clue for stupid people.

Because most will be taken from the parts bin of their 'mother companies' and adapted, as per Aston Key (Ford).
I recall seeing an Aston key on Top Gear that was from Volvo
They were until about 2008. It was a Ford company for a long time, as was Volvo. The key had a Volvo fob, covered in leather.

I do quite like that XC90 one. I'm sure there are a few examples of ones that are reasonable, but for the most part they are fugly! Also agree with the notion of them doing more. App to monitor MPG etc? More functions like seat warmers etc?

I'm just saying that if you can get a piece of flappy plastic on your front wing that'll deform to channel air one way or another dependent on your speed, why can't your key look less like something that unlocks a storage bin??
The Volvo one can open and close the boot and open and shut the windows. Some convertibles also let you open/close the roof from the fob as well. I can't remember if the hybrid XC90 has a remote start button on the key fob, but you can certainly remote start it from the smartphone app and set timers for the heating/cooling.

I'm not sure if smartphone apps are the way to go though just to get in the car as they are considerably more clunky than a key fob as you have to unlock the phone, open the app, wait for it to connect, then find the button/option for what you want to do. NFC would be good replacement for keys but I'm not sure I'd trust them to make it secure enough.

I like the information that the apps give you, this is the sort of info you can get from the Jaguar app:

True, but most of the rest is metal. It's not a cheap-looking thing.

Certainly very cool, but I dread to think what the cost of a replacement is.... Anyone got any idea?
