RE: Subaru Isle of Man TT car - new pictures
Discussion
Am I the only one whodoesn't want a car to get anywhere close to the TT boys around the circuit? What they do for a living is pretty majestic in my eyes, regardless of lap times. To get those figures with nothing but a pair of leather kecks between you and the next lamppost deserves recognition.
Long live the TT, Long live all those that ride her

680hp , a WRC car a with no restrictions and an epic driver who knows the track. I can hardly wait to see this!
Can it challenge some of the fastest bikes if that specification is accurate?
Not a hope - lap record for bikes is over 130 mph average so it hasn't got a hope! Just another PR-hype exercise for PR purposes! Can it challenge some of the fastest bikes if that specification is accurate?
And the bikes don't cost quite that much!
Utmost respect for any bike rider prepared to make that sort of commitment - it really is the knife-edge between bonkers fast and a monster accident! But I suppose that is what adrenalin is all about........!

Completely agree.Long live the TT, Long live all those that ride her
Lapping the island in a tin box is in no way comparable to what the bikes are doing.
I hope it stays sensible on hear this time!
I agree that they are going for much more than 120mph with that spec. If a lightly modified road car could do 117.5mph. Then this full on race car has to deliver much more.
Forget the bikes , what's your bet for the time and average speed then?

Pointless excercise if you ask me.
No one did, but thanks for your valued input all the same.Arbs said:
What's the point in doing it with no competition, it's a one horse race! Well done Subaru you finished 1st and had the fastest lap out of everyone!
You may ask have asked the same of Edmund Hiliary or Lino Lacedelli. It may have escaped you (and some of other individuals who contributed to this thread in a somewhat negative manner) that this is PistonHeads, and NOT the Daily Mail, the site's tag line is "Speed Matters".
It doesn't matter whether it' on two wheels, three wheels or four, it's speed that matters, not the cost, nor whether a £10k bike can monster a £600k car.
As for the two wheeled brigade being brave/heroes, there's no doubting that, but a look at Higgin's save on YouTube shows the level of commitment required to extract a quick average lap time from a car around the TT circuit. Had MH not caught the car, it would still have been a massive shunt irrespective of the protection provided by the cage, seats, harnesses etc.
If Higgins's car should suffer a terminal failure or he lose control of the car on this years event, the resultant shunt would look more akin to an aircraft crash than a car crash.
And on the basis a certain Mr Pond managed to coerce a "relatively standard" Rover 827 around the TT circuit at an average speed of 100mph, and MH went on to beat that by what ? 17-18mph ? in his lightly modded Subaru, I think a 680hp 4wd, WRC based STi with decent suspension and improved aero will be a lot closer to a 132mph average lap time than many believe.

To get that average they will be hitting 170+ in places and for a long time .
Not hard on a closed road,in my DB7 v12 I hit just shy of 180 up the mountain mile so Sulby straight and through Glen Vine I'd expect him to be in that region. Would give anything to have a shot at a closed roads lap. Many a time thought about going for it at 3 in the morning but the risks of getting caught or hurting someone aren't worth it.Wow, best of luck to the team with this, it will be interesting to see what is possible with a bigger budget and a more bespoke machine than the last attempt.
This car also proves the ridiculous trend for multiple exhausts on the current crop of hot hatches (Civic Type R, Golf R Audi, S3 et al) is nothing more than marketing driven rubbish. How can they possibly need four massive exhausts when this monster makes do with a single pea shooter?

Balls. Watched it every year and whilst he does his best, he still needs a 100mph flying start from Governer's dip to do the same average lap speed as a 600cc side car. If you think he can come close to a 230hp super bike, ridden by Mc Guinness, Anstey, Dunlop or Hutchinson, you are deluded. His car will be slower than slow. Fact.It may have escaped you (and some of other individuals who contributed to this thread in a somewhat negative manner) that this is PistonHeads, and NOT the Daily Mail, the site's tag line is "Speed Matters".

"But the Subaru is only 20mph or so slower than the bikes."
Yes at every single point of the circuit the bike averaging 20mph+ more.
I'm looking forward to see what this monster Scooby does. The biggest test is maintaining very high speed of the sweeping sections. Where the bikes can hit 190, and make very minor adjustments to smoothly take the small bends, the cars width is its weakness. What would this car likely hit top speed?
This should crack 120 quite easily based on the previous time, I'm going 125.8mph.
