I agree. Barbie pink insurance group 1 cars, with a limiter and a black box.

The tragic injuries and type of car have been done to death but he is also guilty of risking his passenger's life. Did the passenger try and stop him once he felt it was getting out of control? Either way the passenger has a lot to live with too.

Awful thing to happen to a family and two young children. Just horrible. Is the car he was driving relevant?
Yes, but not perhaps in the way a lot are saying, my next door neighbours have a Discovery, they are lovely and dont indulge in chasing down other motorists, well I dont think they would, most peopel who drive Discoverys that I come across dont stand out, generally seems to be as well driven as anything else, perhaps because it isnt a bling mopbile, its a bit too utilitarian looking for the average purveyor of shiny, and even most of them arent outright psychos.

I digress, the important bit, and I think why this was such a devastating accident is that they weigh almost two and a half tonnes, a full tonne heavier than the Signum this poor family was in, a car that itself isnt a tiddler by any means, had they been in anything smaller like a supermini, I expect that they would have died.

I suppose that is my main issue with big SUV's, like a dog that is ok until it bites, they are fine until they hit something else, coupled with the fact that they are now so powerful, its a hell of a thing to get up to speed as rapidly as they do, big turbo engines, lots of low down power, auto boxes, power steering, isolated a bit, they do tend to end up driven a bit too quickly for their size and surroundings, any car can be a danger but 2500 kilos of Discovery is a real battering ram of a vehicle so its no wonder there were such devastating injuries.

Everyone needs to take responsibility for how they drive and the safety of others but I think the SUV drivers need to take a little bit more care and realise what their car can do to pretty much anything else other than another SUV.

I dont hate them, dont get that idea, choice and all that, not really my thing but I can see the appeal, but there is a bit of extra responsibility as your vehicle gets bigger and heavier.

Indeed the kinetic energy of these things is huge. Many don't hang around either.

I was wondering about the passenger too. I wonder at what point he would have spoken out and asked / told his mate / colleague / boss to get a grip. A dangerous thing sometimes the male ego / bravado.

In addition, JLR's insurers are not admitting liability and quibbling about the cost of the children's treatment, although they have made an interim payment.

Jesus H Christ. It doesn't matter what he was driving. There are ridiculous tts in every make and model on the road. People who shouldn't be allowed near any vehicle. BMW, Audi, Vauxhall, Ford... every make.

Modern cars weigh so much these days (c.2000kg Saloons) that you're likely to come off in a pretty horrific way regardless of what hits you in an incident like the one in the OP. Pure physics that if you drive something that weighs c.2000kg ploughs at 40mph into something doing roughly the same the other way, that energy has to dissipate somewhere and it's not going into nothingness.

Just happens that this absolute twonk was driving one of the heavier ones and carried even more devastating weight alongside his clear rage issues into the equation.

I can understand if the Mazda almost crashed him off the road or was driving dangerously that you'd be upset. But to go on a rampage - childish and not befitting of someone in charge of a motor vehicle. This is why I'd be an advocate of mental health testing prior to licence issue. There really is a large percentage of the populous on the road who can't control themselves - as is shown in the provenance of the road rage videos and idiot UK drivers on Facebook and YouTube.

To be brutally honest the OPs crusade post against 4x4 drivers was a bit silly - but the real story is that two children have had their lives irreparably changed and by the looks of a post above will not only suffer physically but mentally to a degree too.

Somehow most of PH cannot rise above the childishness of the 4x4 comment in the original post.

Maybe with an additional "T" plate as well, just to warn others. We all know what that will stand for.

On a more serious note, I hope this guy has his assets seized to help towards the costs these poor little girls will endure over their lives. Not that money will ever be enough. But at least it will be a start.

I just hope stories like this make everyone think that much more when out and about driving. I know it will be on my mind. Rather like that video from last year or so, when a motorbike sailed at high speed into a car at a junction.

Since when has it been socially acceptable to publish video clips of kids getting paralysed?

If it makes someone think that driving in such a stupid manner is unacceptable and there are serious consequences for the victims then I don't see the problem, presumably the family authorised the release of the clip.

Hopefully one day there will be some sort of DNA analysis, or a test of some kind to weed out those not fit to drive. At the very least they could use this data to charge many multiples higher insurance costs to some. Ideally limit them to taxi rides or automated cars at some point. That would actually help to stop this happening again.

I'm astounded that the culprit has shown absolutely no remorse for what happened. Even allowing for his story that he 'lost control', I haven't seen any remorse or empathy for the plight he's created being reported.

These type of people baffle me. How can he live with himself after this? In some respects it's worse than if the children had died, since he'll know that every day he is alive, they can't walk because of what he did. That takes some thinking about, and yet he seems entirely unmoved.

I'd never drive in such a way, but if I'd ever somehow caused those sort of injuries to happen to someone...whether in a car or elsewhere, and even if accidental, I would struggle to carry on. Throw in the run up to a trial where you are likely to get sent down and I rather think I'd be walking into the sea or something. I just don't get how people are able to 'face it out' and carry on like nothing happened.

I also don't see why we have to allow people like this the opportunity to drive again in the future. A judge should have the ability in extreme cases to say, that's it....never again for you.

I see people on Facebook posting what a member of a certain group has done "Look at this bd, they are all like that you know....", that is the implication and its really just a way to further their own agenda, Lee Rigby seems to be the ultimate expression of this, poor guy was murdered in the street by lunatics and has ended up a bit of a poster boy for EDL types, yes it was terrible but had he been stabbed to death on a night out by a white bloke nobody would know his name, so a knob in an SUV does something bad, it must mean all SUV drivers are like that, no it doesnt, some may be, yes that type of car does attract the odd aggressive pillock but by and large most arent, had he been in a Focus would the thread have been posted at all ?

looking at the clip it was their video, and its only the external shot, no liveleak type stuff

it is good that he's got a long sentence, but for the grace of god and all that

Really? Is this not trivialising things a bit?
Think about what he's done. Do you really want this man driving any vehicle after that? Pink or otherwise.
I wouldn't be comfortable with him on a bicycle quite honestly.

It's quite surreal isn't it. Rather like letting murderers , rapists and child abusers out of jail. Oh wait, we already do. As if staying in a box will cure them and everything will return to normal. Ridiculous.

The parents chose to release it in the hope it may make others stop and think.

There are arguments for and against doing that, but they are well intentioned in doing it.
