Hypothetical. What would you buy?

635CSI?

944?

205 GTi? (Two 205 GTis??) (not sure how much they are going for!)

Or is it all a bubble and should I stick it in a Santander 3% job.

Recommendations - Go!

MK1 Focus RS, DC2 Type R...

I would take a punt on a clio 182 trophy, before they go silly. wink

Said it before, will say it again - R129 SL and probably the 500. For 10k you 'might' be able to stretch to a 600 possibly a leggy one. Not a sports car but a nice good quality refined roadster that should creep up in value if looked after.

Too late, values for them are insane. You could get the best 182 in the world and a set of the trophy suspension for less than the cost of a half decent trophy.

A good E46 M3 must surely be as cheap as it's ever going to be?

From what I've seen you can find a goood example for around 7k, I looked at a low mileage one for under 4k about five years ago, should of snapped it up.

TVR Chim

As always, maintenance will probably outweigh appreciation

Nothing is guaranteed to go up in value

Just buy something which you've always liked and if after all costs it goes up then that's a quality problem.

Astra GTE Mk1 1.8 Ltr.

Only 30 remaining in the UK. I'd wager you should nab one of these rare beauties.

No 996 911 yet?!

Possibly because most PHers recognise that the real appreciators of the 996s (manual, pre-facelift/ 3.4, tintop, RWD) are now scarce at ~£10K? A clean, low-miles/ good history car (pref with IMS preventative work done) would be a keeper right now. Bet there are still afew good 996s lurking, maybe for another year or so anyway...

Porsches are generally quite a safe marque investment-wise, unless your buying eg. an old 2.5 Boxster or Cayenne.

VX220 is a great shout. Seems like only yesterday I was looking at decent ones for not much more than £6K.

Are the ~£10K S1 Elises all gone now? Haven't looked at them for ages.

E46 M3s (manual) must be a fairly safe investment (splitty-floors aside). E36 M3s well on their way too- no longer the 'unloved' generation of M3 it once was.

TT mkiv Supras can still be had ~£10K, and take it from a fanboy/ former owner- values really are soaring. Low-miles, unmolested TTs go for £20K+ based on condition/ spec. Pick up one of the few ~£10K examples left out there (either because they need resto or the seller hasn't paid attention to the market) and you'll have a rapidly appreciating asset to enjoy regularly. Properly iconic car too.

R32/33 GT-R Skylines going/ have gone the same way. R33 GT-Rs in particular seemed to be available ~£7K only a few years ago. Similar to the E36 M3 (although to a lesser extent) in that it was the 'unloved' generation for many years. Also similar now in the sense that people are cottoning on to their value/ quality. Just look at what has happened to non-GTR 33s; you could buy them for afew £K not so long ago; I was surprised to see tidy ones currently start around £6K.

Stock, low-miles EK9 Civic/ DC2 Integra Type Rs also need to be snapped up sooner rather than later (in 'Champ White' please).

Same can be said for most truly 'iconic' Jap stuff ofcourse; try finding a cheap FD RX7 or 2-door classic Impreza now.

£10K is the most 'interesting' price point when looking for something to invest in imho- lots out there at the mo. Follow wise PHers suggestions (not necessarily mine) and you won't go far wrong.

Well, 10k pound tt auto Supra is a bit of a stretch. If you found one its not a good one. Maybe it could be a better to have a good conditional manual n/a. Anyway, i would say this car is a safe bet. Demand is high around the world at the moment and in you guys have the cheapest Supras in the world.

I would be tempted by a Clio Trophy or Clio Williams if it were to be a second car, I doubt I'd ever make any money on the purchase however, once you factor in running costs the car would have to appreciate a fair bit to provide a return.

Unless I crash it, which I probably would - then I get squat. laugh

That's what people were saying about house prices in 2000.
