All good points and ideas. Think the best answer to this might be an old Rolex... scratchchin
Ah yes Pepsi bezel GMT, green bezel Sub or White dial Explorer 2 is what you want.

Back on cars though, a friend has a rough old E30 318is and can't take it anywhere without people trying to buy it off him.

Sweet choice that one - high rpm n/a rwd and "relatively" cheap to enter.

Highest bhp/Ltr pre 458 speciale.

Astra GTE Mk1 1.8 Ltr.

Only 30 remaining in the UK. I'd wager you should nab one of these rare beauties.
Very difficult cars to find as owners like myself hold on to them, I have two one being a pre production press / test car originally owned by Vauxhall and the other is a low mileage / low owner un restored car that was in storage for nearly 20 years but I now have it back on the road attending classic car shows

Lotus Elise S1's don't seem to have shifted down in price for years, even really tatty ones.

Low volume, with little driver aids, and desirability is key.

I'd guess some of those already mentioned you've maybe missed the boat on a bit?

You're wanting to pick something at the bottom end of its depriciation, but was made desirable enough to appreciate.

Some rarer Gran Turismo 90s Jap, S1 Elise or clean TVRs are good shouts I'd say. Maybe won't appreciate heavily, but I doubt you'd loose out.

It's a bubble.

Santander 3%.

Wait for the pop.
That's what people were saying about house prices in 2000.
Yes, and look at all things the Gov has done to make sure housing was kept expensive, how many billions of tax payer pounds wasted. Do you think there is a similar desire to keep old cars expensive? when this bubble pops don't expect the Gov to chuck billions around to keep a 944 above £10K.

To the OP, whatever you get, buy something you really like, so when/if the bubble does pop you still have something you like and enjoy. Also remember that the value is dependent on condition, so make sure you have suitable storage to maintain/improve your "investment", also don't use it much as the more you use it, the greater the chance the things that make the car special will disappear.

They've been doing the rounds in the mainstream mags just lately haven't they.

A good feature on the Mk1 Astra GTE in EVO last month ( they've done the VW Golf Gti Mk1 ( the one that VW own ) in the mag this month )
Plus Top Gear mag has done an 80s hatches feature in their latest issue

Surely the E36 M3 Evo or GT being fewer numbers produced would be the sharper investment if your looking at that option.

The one that I would buy right now if I had £10K is a Bentley Turbo R. That's way too cheap for a "proper" classic car.

Monaro. Not suggesting for one moment it's a classic but they haven't lost any money in 5 years and now seem to be appreciating.

Too late, values for them are insane. You could get the best 182 in the world and a set of the trophy suspension for less than the cost of a half decent trophy.

A good E46 M3 must surely be as cheap as it's ever going to be?
Insane?

Around £5k can still comfortably get you a good one providing the seller isn't a chancer.

People have short memories, it will go pop, it has many times before and it will again.

Homes are not like cars - there are more cars built than are required and they can rapidly be built and moved to where the demand is.

However I feel the RX7 is still undervalued - compared to the price of similar rare, beautiful, fast cars.

Yep, I think so. They're cracking little cars, but their values are totally out of step with the rest of the RS Clio market. I can't help feeling they're overdue for a correction, or maybe the 172 and 182 are just undervalued at the moment.

Of course if people place value on the badge then that's fair enough and it'll certainly be easier to sell on in future, but personally I just couldn't bring myself to pay the premium when the significant changes are easily added to a 182 for a chunk less than the cost of the Trophy.

YMMV smile
